what does this shift kit mean in there explanation

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/trg-tfod-hd2
Hey guys
I am looking at installing this shift kit. It says in the information the following
(holds 1st, 2nd, and 3rd to any rpm, backshifts to 3rd, 2nd, and 1st at any rpm.)
What does this mean? does it come with several different valve springs so you can adjust the rpm change or does it mean something else?
Any ideas?
cheers Maca

I is meaning to manual hold the shifter in a gear it will not automatically shift to another. Manually up or down shift at an RPM or load.

i have the same kit in my 518...
What that means is you can set the shift point's in the trany at different rpm's
i set mine for 2000 rpm's..
So no mater what gear i'm cruising at, 3rd-2nd it will only up/down shift at 2000 rpm's so i leave it in drive she shift's at 2000 rpm. or i manually shift it.
You will love this kit i recommend it highly...

It sounds like the kit turns a standard valve body into a manual valve body. I was under the impression that required a VB replacement, ie you couldn't turn one into the other. Most "shift kits" just change the shift points and get rid of some of the slop between gears. Best bet is to call Summit or the manufacturer.

AMD -

I have a full reverse pattern manual valve body in my Charger. It's great for the track (and IMHO) the only way to go for that. While it's cool on the street, there are times when it can be just a little annoying. It is a full race tranny, BTW, with no kick-down and you really don't down shift under power.

my transmission seams to shift late and its just a daily driver in the summer and i don't really race it or even take it on the highway, just up to 45/50 mph.

Archer
it's not a manual valve body it just changes the shift point's i could have set mine up too 4000 or more so from light throttle until 4000 it will hold the gear.. i still use my kick down but i usually shift manually.
AMD for your set up you will love it you can raise your shift point a little or allot or just leave it where it's at
raising it will help eliminate early shifting under light throttle which will eliminate the "BOG" that happens this will improve your economy.
the other spring's in the kit improve shift speed and firmness
you wont regret it.

don't use this one the b&m is a cheap kit the transgo is a far superior kit you will be happier it has more upgrade part's the b&m is just a plate.
your trany need's the gear selector valve and the accumulator spring's spend the extra get a better kit!

Thanks for all the replies guys. It cleared up my decicion.
My trans is a 727 a518
Hey gorts, when you say you could choose the shift points, how did you do that. I phoned transgo and they said i cant choose different shift points. They said it will be what it will be. I really want to choose shift points too. Is there extra valve springs to choose from or do you set it a different way.
Cheers

Yea maca
They include a spring kit that controls the pressure in the governor circuit i was able to raise the shift point with the springs they are color coded and the instructions are very detailed so take your time and have a clean uncluttered work space when you take apart your valve body ...
And if you can i would greatly appreciate if you could post the directions, my manual was eaten up by silver fish and palmetto bugs would like to do some changes in mine but cant find a online source..
If you got any other question's just ask us

No worries mate, If i get that kit i will post the details.

When changing the governor to get different shifts does thatchange both 1-2 and 2-3 shifts about the same RPM? As i am wanting to changethe 2-3 shift but not the 1-2 shift point.

Here is an article i found that mentions how to change individualshift points. It says that i need to try different springs in the 2-3 shiftvalve. Its a good read.

http://www.moparmusclemagazine.com/techarticles/drivetrain/mopp_0208_increasing_shift_speeds_on_the_727_torqu eflite/viewall.html

Were you able to just change 1 shift point or did the kitchange both points.

cheers Maca

It changed both shift points
they are both at 2000 rpm i have no complaints
the thing to remember when changing shift point's is that your motor will never shift to early causing a bog.
And don"t worry about reprogramming the shift's and think it's going to slam into the next gear on every shift with this kit you can control the frimness of the shift from "nice and firm" too "kick you in the pants"!
my shift feel is... fast firm solid. Not harsh. even at full throttle.

this is the one im using in my 518...46re.

Isn't this the kit that he needs for the 904?
The kit that was listed in the original post was for a late model transmission...

no we got the right one i double checked, and i have used both of them.
Remember the valve bodies are interchangeable on the 727 / 904. When i blew up my 904's i just swapped the valve bodies the same with the 727 just been swapping the valve body for the last several.
My brother has several valve bodies on the shelf reprogrammed and ready to go i can do the same but i have just been swapping it from the original 904's to my second 727. now that tranie is on the shelf and i'm running a 518 in my 86 5th ave.

there are several kits available these are the one's i have used for over 20 yrs i have never had a problem. i have run them in all my vehicles, work vans and hot rod's.
The kit's are so programmable and the new valve parts really improve the longevity of the torque flight tranies!

I brought the kit and I am going to fit it. It should behere in 1 week. From what I understand the kit will increase transmissionpressure by changing the governor weight and TV line pressure springs. Whichcan allow me to use different weights and springs to change the rpm of theshifts. Which will also give me better and firmer shifts. What the kit will notallow me to do is to change one shift rpm and leave the other as is. I want toget the shifts changing at the same rpm. From what I have read in the article (Diallingin your torque flight) I must put the kit in and then test it. If I want toincrease or decrease an individual shift I then must change the shift valvespring as the kit does not have any shift valve springs in it. A softer springwill let that particular shift change earlier and a harder spring will hold itin gear longer.

Remember my trans was changing 1-2 very early and 2-3 verylate. Here is some pics of my springs verse springs out of a 727 trans I haveused and know is good.

My 2-3 shift valve spring is longer which would hold it ingear longer.

http://img547.imageshack.us/img547/2888/imag1124c.jpg

My 1-2 shift control valve spring is shorter which would letit change a bit earlier.

http://img836.imageshack.us/img836/4061/imag1126k.jpg

I am tempted to use the 727 springs when I put the a518 backtogether. Does anyone know where I can purchase new springs from?

What I really need help with, is someone with a factorymagnum/a518 set up, could measure the arc of the cable at the throttle body forme as I still need to get that set up right as I am using a carby.Themeasurements need to be something like the top pic on this

http://www.rowand.net/Shop/MetalShop/ThrottleValveCableBracket/TVCableInstructions2.jpg

Or if anyone has the bracket off the throttle body I couldbuy and modify it to fit my carby.

cheers

I have two here to measure, one from a truck, one from a Jeep I believe, both the same. They do not have the cables parallel or crossing as shown. The cables come toward the throttle shaft from opposite directions. The TV cutout is as shown.

Throttle valve attachment has a radius of .990"

Throttle cable attachment has a radius of 1.225"

This is a two venturi MPFI throttle body. Hope this helps.

Thanks Coronet500
I just need 1 more measurement. Here is a pic of the 2 measurements i need. I am guessing that the lug i have chosen in the pic is the tv lug
Thanks Maca

Yes that's it. Measurement is squared down from top air horn down through throttle center. measured from center to the left as in photo.

=.760" and is 39 degrees left of vertical. All with throttle blades closed.

Thanks all

The kit i have ordered looks like it has different governorweights to install. Do i have to completely disassemble the rear over drivesection and 800lb spring as shown in this video to install the new governorweights?

cheers

maca
if you ordered the kit i listed below the kit just had springs for the shift point's
i guess the hydraulic circuit for the governor is adjusted at the valve body end not the tail shaft end.
in that kit the only thing i had was assortment of color coded springs, i did not have to remove the tail shaft housing.

Hi all

Got the shift kit today and have it nearly installed. The1st page asks me to remove the OD case from the rear to remove the pivot pinthat holds the rear band adjustment in so you can replace the rear servospring. I skipped this step as i don’t really want to pull the back off. I willsee how it goes with the factory spring.

One big thing i noticed was in the instructions it shows theFour Landing Switch Valve and tells you to grind half the face of one spot likethis.

Mine has the smooth finish worn off and is sticky to slide. It is also ground wrong. It is ground right across the landing instead of halfway. I wonder if this was causing my problem of holding in 2-3 shifts. Doesanyone know what the Four Landing Switch Valve does? Or what it controls? In the manual it is known as a switch valve. If it is the shift would it be the 2-3 shifts.

cheers maca

That's not the kit i installed.
See the pic below...
the "manual valve " you notice the thin damn what do you call it?
Where the arrow is pointing you will notice that is smaller than the others that's what you got to do with the valve not just a small grind my kit came with the new manual valve.
NEVER MIND I GOT THE WRONG PART.
THIS IS WHAT YOU NEED I THINK? REPLACE THAT WORN PART!
6. "Improved Torque Converter Lock-Up Clutch Switch Valve." The circuit timing of applied vs. release pressure exhausted is critical for proper TCC operation. The OEM valve stroke contributes to soft TCC apply, shudder complaints, and increased damper spring loads. Replace the OEM switch valve with this Sonnax’s switch valve. The new Sonnax switch valve improves the timing and flow to the apply and release circuits. Fits 42 / 46 / 47RE / RH . Cost $17.00

The kit came with a new manual valve. It's different to your pic but it is from the kit so I think I will use it. I have a new switch valve coming tomorrow. I had a good chat to the guys at transgo and they were very helpful. I will let you know how I go.

Sometimes it's worth it to let the tranny experts do it. That's only my opinion stating that I don't know crap about trannys except how to install them.

B&M shift kit: done.

Me personally:

I would ONLY EVER run a reverse manual valve body. Shift linkage is a pain in the ***. I set my own shift points.

Perfect for racing and the street. Perfect for burn offs.

There are some step's of rebuilding a trany that you need to be exact in and careful but they are pretty straight forward if you can rebuild a motor a trany is not that much harder.
all you need are the tools and a manual...Hell you need less tools
Shop press, micrometer, some picks, a few organization tray's for your parts
every thing i've ever needed is available at the local trany supply house assembly grease, shims, rebuild kits, shift improvement kits, hard part's, and the such...Then with high performance part houses like PACT...
