1968 charger RT - back to original disk brakes
 

hi there - newbie to the forum, i am sure you can help. I didnt find anything in the other threads

my 68 charger rt is matching the fendertag except for one thing. the fendertag says the car came with front disk and powerbrakes

D9: Front Disk Brakes
H1: Power Brakes

Sadly enough, someone exchanged the disk brakes against drum brakes sometime in the past. Now I would like to get the car back as original as can be which means getting it back on to the 1968 4 piston disk in the front and powerbrakes the way it was shipped.

There are a lot of aftermarket drum to disk kits on offer but what would you recommend in order to make it as original as it can be.

Was it a race car in it's life? I would check the spindles and see if the have provisions for bolting the caliper adapter on or if they were changed.. Other wise find some charger disk brake spindles or dart spindles 72-75? (large ball joint) You can use the 10' disks from a volare? or 11' disks from a mid/late 70's Charger/diplomat type, depends on if you have 15" wheels. Calipers the 4 piston may be hard to find? If not you can use any caliper and adapter from a Challanger. (PIN type) or the later Volare single piston and adapter

not sure whether it was a race car in its life. sounds like a strange idea to convert from disk to drum if you ask me but i might not have the full picture. was than conversion done to race cars?

the parts would be extremely hard to source from over here and even if i do trips to classic junkyards once a this will be a challenge. but lets see.

is there something like a repro kit that would be a recreation of the original 4-piston calipers and break system? 66 - 69 used 4 piston clalipers as far as i know.

I think The idea was less rolling resistance.. I have no idea what is available to you.
The brake kits are great although not 100% resto correct. They come with every thing you need. I converted my 67 Coronet to disks with an assortment of factory parts. I preferred it without the power brakes, but it had a healthy cam..

That's the article I used too. I also back in the early 70's put BIG 11x2 1/2 front drums on a 66 Coronet. that was a piece of cake

did it require 15" rims?
