74 Cuda wiring, just getting 1 click

hello

New to the forum, new to Mopar.
I got the 74 just a little over two weeks ago.
The car is nice and all paints good, motor is original 88k. Tranny has been gon through, new clutch.
but they left me the electrical.
day 1 break lights out, replaced switch.
While under the dash noticed both wires to the ammeter on one post and both looking rough, melted together.
did an Internet search and made the “mad” wire update.
Ran for a day and battery died. Charged battery still good. New volt meter and ground to volt meter.
Cleaned up wires in general. They were painted when the car was.
Took it to the car wash and when done.... 1 click.
Checked all the wiring and grounds, replaced starter.
Watched some vid telling me to put a sw3 in line with the ignition and starter(basically looks like an old ford starter relay) and decided to skip that crap.
volts to the alt are same as at battery as well as starter relay.
it will jump across the starter relay, so there is that but...

ignition wire to the column... I’m by myself so checking the start and run volts is kinda difficult, if there is a way I’d like to hear it.

anyone have any ideas?

Thanks for your time

Monty

Welcome.

My buddy mechanic has a bunch of 12-15 ft leads made up for different jobs. He can be at the rear bumper with his meter checking something at the front of the car.

Don't forget the Bulkhead Connector.

Thanks Cornet 500
Bulk head connector... going to go at that thing with a drill.... the blade connectors are worthless half covered in silicone half corroded 😠

Clutch switch still good>
Sounds like a bad ground to me....

Monty.Smith 07-23-2018 08:56 PM

So clutch switch.... there is no power to that wire on the starter relay. I’ve replaced everything else guess I should update that as well. What the heck right....

thanks for your reply RacerHog

There is no power to the small wire on the solenoid either...

Monty.Smith 07-24-2018 08:07 PM

Ok,

drilled blade switch out ran new ignition wire to the new ignition switch, ignition wire is ran to the horn relay then jumped across the horn relay then down to starter relay. Yellow wire. Ohm meter says yeay, I get just one click.
Jump the clutch switch to ground, just one click,
Jump ignition terminal at starter relay with grounded clutch switch, just one click.
prognosis
New Starter relay bad....
whoda thunk it....
tomorrow buy new starter relay and prey, otherwise this gets a 12ga enema.....😠 Na it’s to pretty.
new wire harness on the way

RacerHog 07-24-2018 08:28 PM

So if you jump it at the solenoid it cranks? Rite?
And if you jump it at the relay it just Clicks ???

Monty.Smith 07-24-2018 09:08 PM

Racer

yes I can jump across the main post to the secondary wire to the starter and it cranks.
But jumping from the ignition terminal to the main power, just a click, if the clutch switch isn’t engaged or grounded no click.

To hot wire wire the ignition switch needs constant power after it is jumped across,

right now one thing isn’t happening, no power is being directed to the middle terminal witch is the small wire to the starter when the ignition is switched.

The one click is happening in the relay but something is not completing the circut to the starter wire.

ITS ALIVE!

all 245 horsies are purring.

have you ever heard the analogy “start with the cheapest part first? Well I did but it was bad soooo

replaced the starter relay and she fired right up.

Good thing is now its about 30% new wire so I’ve got a great jump on that project.

thanks for your input Iawan, racer, coronet.

found that the rear main is weeping tho so a replacement probably a stroker will be in the near foreseeable future.

Glad you got it up and running..... I had a feeling it was going to be that starter relay... Good Job... :)

RT Starting Woes!

I know I'm way late to this thread and hope you all are still here! I have a similar problem with my '67 Coronet RT. All the electric systems in the car work, but occasionally she won't turn over with the key. I can jump the relay and get her started, but don't know where I should be looking. I replaced the dash cluster and harness a year ago or so, but this problem has only been happening lately. Thanks for any help!
