Part ID/Horn Touble Shooting
 

Trying to get my horn to work on my 73 RR so I can pass an inspection, and I found this mounted to the ballast resistor with the wire cut:

It has the same green/red wire as the horn but was cut by the previous owner. I couldn't see any other wire like that in the area. Any direction would be great!

That is nothing but a radio noise suppression capacitor

You have a service manual? What have you checked? Can you hear the relay click?

Horns are simple. I believe yours? plugs into the fuse panel. "Get your head down there" when it's quiet, and work the horn button. You should hear the relay click

If not it's most likely a problem up in the column. Next, access the harness connector going up into the column. There are two........one for ignition and one for the turn signal switch / horn. Access the horn wire (usually black check the diagram) and check for voltage. Pull the horn relay out.........voltage should go away.

EDIT---TS switch connector is a long slender connector. One end is "V" shaped (pointed) for a 'key.' You want the black wire on the FAR END from the pointed end

If this checks out, take a jumper and short that wire to ground. Horns should operate. If not listen for click of relay. If none, replace the relay. If you hear it click, go out and use a large jumper (no 14 or so) to jumper direct from battery to horn and see if it operates

Horn power wires out in the engine bay should be dark green

Great info, thanks! I can hear the click in the steering column when I press the horn, but nothing in the relay. I will pick up a relay on the way home today and try that.


And yes, I have a Haynes manual. Been pouring over diagrams to fix up the mess I inherited lol. I'll have some help tonight so I can have someone press the horn while I check for power at the horn itself.

Haynes is not a manual. Haynes, Chilton, are "funny books."

Awesome, can't thank you enough. The horn relays are non existent in my city, but I did find one for a charger that should work, just doesn't have the tab for the buzzer. It was cheap so I'll give it a go before ordering one online.

Ends up it was a combination of things...new relay worked, then found there was no power at the horn. Traced that to a loose firewall connector and now the horn itself doesn't work lol.

Take the horn off and bang it on the ground !!! May get it to work again..

try grounding the steering column
