3rd member change

would it be a good idea to change out my 3.55 with a 2.94? also how do i find out if the 3rd member will take 30 spline axles? it also said its an open rear. im tryin to get my cruisin rpms down since i dont really beat on it or race it. i just like to cruise the boulevard as they say.here are the numbers i got from the one i am looking at on craigslist.. its for an 8 3/4 which is the rear i have.its a 741 housing and the yolk number is 7260....2.94 gear ratio. thanks for any input. sorry if i seem to be askin silly questions lately but most of my knowlegde lies in motors and not really much else. thanks again.

Well, I'll answer in order.

1) No.

2) You count the splines on the gearing. I think most are 30 or 32?

3) 8 3/4 is good, 741 AND 742 case is bad. Get a 489 case. 489 is stronger.

4) Get 3:23's. They are good for cruising, and also good if you were to take it to the track.

a 323 gear is a great all around gear and you can find handfulls at a car yard and you should be able to get it for less then 100 bucks , call around and you will be amazed at how many there are lying around :)

Okay. I won't try and help you out.

I'm young too you know.

With these old cars, you can't buy cheap things b/c they'll break. I learned that first hand. Just buy the right part, for the right price the first time around.

I agree with going with a set of 3.23 gears. 2.94 is just too low, even for cruisin.

As far as buying cheap stuff, just don't do it. It's not worth the money to sit there and wonder why its not fitting, working right, then to get out there and find out that it just broke and you only had it for a few days. Trust me when I say, its worth saving up for a few extra weeks and buying a good quality part.

right on guys thanx alot. i appreciate the help. ill go pokin around the local yards this weekend to see if i can find a 3.23 set. if not then ill just save a bit more and buy new ring set and rebuild kit and have the guys at progear here in san diego help me out. and blue68 i gotta say you have a wicked car. you guys here are alot more kik back here then the ls1 camaro forum. some of those guys were a lil to hardcore for me. i practically got shunned out when i told them that i got a mopar. good thing i didnt tell them that i had a mopar years before i got a chevy!!!!

I know what you mean, I used to really hate the chubby guys, But in time, I learned that its just inherant with them. So now I just smile say thank you to them and go my way. its not worht the breath or time to say anything to them, they cut each others throat and then actlike best freinds w/ each other. I just have no time for that crap. thast why I have mopes . moparites, as a whole are really decent people, there are the few , that have 1 but still have a vete hanging round, I have nothing good to say about them. between checking the bolts on their fornt ends to see if the proper markings are there, to the wives or girl freinds w/ fake blonde hair, theyre about as fake as you can get. Just 1 mopar mans opinion, ( thast had to endure crap from vete owners for years) My feeling is take your plastic, overrated, and highly under powered image machine and cram it up your crack.

BuckNeccid 12-09-2008 02:15 AM

Naw rr.. do them one better :) I found a 64 vette that had been cut up, bought it for $1200, and 10 years later, it's narrowed up, 383 (Chevy) powered and it drives em crazy cause I didn't restore it. It's even worse when all I talk about is the X's I've had or have, and the one I'm working on now. They don't understand why I'm not taking it out all the time. When I first got it, I was going to put a 440 in it, but I had one Chevy guy who told me he would burn it to the ground if he saw it. He would have... I decided to compromise lol. There are some pics of it on the webpage on my profile.

LOL Now thats good, your beating them at their own game. I looked at it. thats a nice car buck.Im glad you did it the way you wanted to instead of the normal way. I had an 83 or 4, it was the year after the strike, had the crossfire motor in it, that thing was a pooch. it ran like crap and at 80 it topped out, and was all over the road, that was back in my early days, had my license a few months and was trying diferent cars, my dad new a car salesman. I had gotten my cuda, and didnt want to drrive it everyday. so I wsa shopping around, tried a 68 camero,78 trans am,few other cars, ended up getting a 73 road runner.never looked back. My cuda was a 73, 340 4 gear, the runner was a 340 auto.

hey blue on yer answer to no. 3 742 housing isnt that bad not a tappered shaft style but alot of 3:23's came in that housing i think that center would hold up fine for what he wants as with the 741 case thats pretty much a 318 car set up [beefy but not bigger motor wise maybe stock 360.too
goodluck

Not knowing his set up (Big blockor small block. 727 or 904 or manuel), yes, you can be right. But with a 742/741 housing, they are alot more weak.

So if he went with a 742 housing w/ 3.55's, and "stepped" on it one too many times: rear end fail.

Its just worth the first time around to get the BEST parts and spend a little bit of money then get WEAKER parts and save a few bucks.

Just my .02
