Most probable causes are a U joint going bad, or "trouble" in the rear end.
To inspect the U joints do NOT just trust wiggling them in place. Remove the driveline, and move the u joints by hand, feeling for roughness in the bearings. Sometimes these can get water inside, rust up, and "feel tight" when in reality the rollers are disintegrating inside.
If it's the rear, could be a number of things, and may not be all that important.
If the rear has had "hard use" you might have damaged something. Does the rear grown or hum or whine at speed? If not, it may be "normal play" from wear.
Try to see if there's bad play on the front drive yoke, and with the car in neutral, rotate the shaft back and forth to see what play is in the ring/pinion.
All "single" rear ends develop some play.

could be spider gears
could be u joint.
could be pinion flange runout, does it clunk upon acelleration and deceleration?
ujoint typically will give youy an unbalancing feeling at highway speeds.
or clunk forward and back but not always,
sounds like this diff may have been neglected. entire driveline for that matter.
