buying a 74 duster

hi im selling my 73 satellite to get this 74 golden duster with ac and power steering and even a cassette player.
before i make my final descision on it i was wondering how hard is it to put a 383 with a 6pack in it
i saw schumacher makes engine mounts converters for this, i was wondering if there hard to use and what kind of problems am i going to run into putting a big block into the car, my man worry is headers or manifolds clearing the steering column.

i dont think it will be a big pain to swap to big block, but you might have to delete the air, add a hood scoop for carb clearance, they are a taller block

In 1974 they used spool mounts vs the old bisquit mounts found on A bodies thru about 1972...I did a 440 swap into a 1969 340 Dart years ago and used the same K frame--but had bisquit mounts....and it wasnt quite right. Go with Schumacher kit and do it correctly. You will need shorter driveshaft if there is a 904 in it now (going to a 727) You will need an 8 3/4 rear end as well, and probably a bigger radiator....From experience, you should use headers like TTI or equivilent, since it will be a total dog w/o them. Plus you would have to make manifolds work...69-70 c body HP work best...especially on driver side, but clearance is close....Use headers.....
Otherwise, a good built 340 or 360 and even some stroke is a much better combo in this if funds are going to be limited. 383 from a 340 or 360 is not really a gain . If you go bigblock--440 is the only way to go. Same weight as 383 and much more potent. Same cost to build as 383. 360's are cheap and with a stroker kit--They make awesome power at the drag strip! You just dont have the "cool factor" of a 6 pack...You must have a free 383 laying around.

I have already done most of the homework for you...visit my A body 440 build at BBD....here is the link...a 383 will fit better than a 440...383 and 400 blocks are B blocks...a 440 is a RB block...it's a inch taller and wider than a 383 or 400..

I thought the 383 was an RB motor also... I could be wrong though.

RB stands for Raised Block...It is higher and wider than a B block 383 or 400

ive been sanding down the front end and primered it but gota sand it all down again because rust ate through the primer because i used cheap primer.
sadly the guy sold the duster for 700 dollars by the time i came back the next day

350, 361, 383, and 400 are all B engines. The 413, 426 wedge and 440 are all RB engines. I know there is a site that explanes all this, but i am too tired right now to look it up If it hasn't been posted by tomorrow evening, I will find it and link to it.

As to the question about putting a big block in an A-Body, it is popular enough to dedicate an entire forum to the subject, and an entire section over at FABO to it, so I know it is popular. I'b going with a stroker 400 in my Duster if I ever get around to it LOL. I keep getting side tracked by these great deals on cars
