knocking please help!!
just today i was on my way to the city and my engine started knocking so i turned around and checked the oil and it was low, so i fill it up and now its still knocking! anyone know of what it could be so i can fix it thanks
|
well...how low was it? if it was low enough to damage bearings (what it sounds like) you need to over haul the engine.
once the bearings run dry they dont have much of a chance left, |
im not sure how long i was running low for cause i checked it like a month ago
but when i checked today before filling up it was really low and it just started knocking so i went home which took like 5 mins and i was driving slow and filled up with oil |
Did the noise just come out of no where?
Higher the revving, faster the noise? Have you since checked for the noise while COLD? |
yes it came out of nowhere and yes higher the revving faster the noise
|
check for an exhaust leak. I had knocking noise that coincided with the motor revs. You could have bad gasket. Try to locate where it's coming from and go from there.

ok thanks that shouldnt be that hard of a job and not too much money
|
my uncle thinks its the wrist pins could that be possible?
|
yeah could be a wrist pin, but seems unlikley but not impossible
|
how can you tell if its a bearing? should i replace all them and see if it still knocks or is there i way i can tell if its that or something else?
|
well i guess i should ask where is your oil pressure at? if it was at lets say 30 pounds did it lower?
the only way to tell for sure is pull the crank and visually check, if you do i would replace both mains and rods, if its a wrist pin you have to pull the heads, all can be done will the engine is in the bay. but its a little difficult, dont buy the bearings till you know for sure what size they are , crank could be turned |
im going to probably pull the engine tomorrow take the oil pan off take the crank out and check the bearings if its not that i have the engine out already and next to check is the drivers side wrist pins because the noise seems like its only coming from the drivers side and not the passenger side,
I really dont know where the oil all went for this to happen because it was full a month ago and i hardly drive it and it doesnt leak and it has like 500miles on rebuild |
okay now i didnt know the sound is coming from one side or the other, if it was the bearings it shouldnt be louder on any side. so now it kinda sounds like a wrist pin. did you try hearing it with a stephoscope?
|
no i havent i dont have one
|
you can use a long screwdriver put the handle to your ear and the end on the block or where ever the sound is coming from and it will work to help pinpoint the location where the knocking is coming from
|
ok ill try that first
