engine swap

I have a 1976 dart sport with a 318 4 speed. I have found a 440 to put in the car, other than motor mounts, rad and torsion bar what else needs to be changed? what bellehouse will I need to connect the 440 to the 4 speed? will the drive shaft need to be shortened?

Most likely you have the aluminum case 4 speed (3 speed with 4 an over drive). I don't think it will last long behind a 440. But that depends on your driving. possbly a rear swap in the future from your current 8 1/4. Personally I would build a stroker small block

A stroker kit for your 318 would be simpler but a A body 4 speed 74 or earlier is needed and you will also need a heavier rear axle, 83/4 mopar or 8.8 Ford. As far as the 440 goes you need to make sure the crankshaft is drilled for a pilot bearing for the input shaft on the 4 speed, so were not drilled.

thanks for the advice, I just priced a stroker kit that takes a 318 and makes it into a 390. think this is the way to go if the machine shop cost is not huge.

I agree, it's been done many times, you can search builds, find the one you like and copy it for proven results. Lots of power in a small package.
