440 Volare

Here is my 76 Plymouth, first built in 1988. The car has sat for 20 years while the kids grew up. It took a good friends death to light the fire again. He built the 440s, trans and set up the rear end gears for the car, we ran the first motor on the year anniversary of his passing.

In a way the car is a time capsule.

I have one motor done and off the dyno and one to go. It will probably be next spring before I start on the body, new paint, updates on the cage and replace the super stock springs with Caltracs.

In the picture the car is missing the front bumper, I had cast one in fiberglass, just hadn't gotten it on the car yet.

Hope you can make your venture a Family affair!!!!

But I still got old dependable.... :)

Iowan 10-01-2016 02:45 PM

Update , it made 620 tq and 645 hp with a mild cam and its been apart for months, I can't decide which way to go, I'm thinking more cam?, but.? It's making a sh## lode of torque all over and 620 hp at 6500 so I don't know.

RacerHog 10-01-2016 04:48 PM

Nothing to shack a stick at..... Put that puppy back together and stuff it in something and go Hot Rod around in it.. :)

Iowan 10-02-2016 02:28 PM

I will be opening the ring gaps and Bob you know what that's for.

RacerHog 10-02-2016 06:21 PM

Spray it till the crank falls out.... And then back it up 2 jets.....

Iowan 10-03-2016 03:19 AM

You got it!

Iowan 10-03-2016 02:07 PM

I know there is 200 lbs in the car that can come out.

RacerHog 10-03-2016 05:19 PM

Just in the driver !!!!!!!!!! :) :) :) Just kidding...

Iowan 10-04-2016 11:23 AM

Sure you are, but I could louse 45.

My daughter used to run my little ford, she's little over 100 lds less than me and a tenth faster.

Iowan 10-04-2016 11:28 AM

Bob have you heard that a lower rpm motor making the same hp ( 800+) as a high rpm motor is harder on the bottom end?

RacerHog 10-04-2016 01:58 PM

Wise tail... Engine balancing was an issue when those story's where going around... :)

RacerHog 10-04-2016 08:16 PM

Your not looking to go like down in the 8's ? Are you? If thats the case... We need a Roaster... :)

Iowan 10-05-2016 11:15 AM

9.90s, I think it would be high torque lode of the lower rpm that would push the crank out.

Iowan 10-05-2016 02:47 PM

Want a gat Bob!
Trying to use my phone, fingers to fat.

RacerHog 10-05-2016 03:52 PM

Hummmmmmm No... :)

So my Plymouth has not had any progress this last year and you would think with all the time I have on my hands it would move forward. I need to paint the engine compartment because I ran the bars from the cage to the end of the frame the last time the motor was pulled. I'm very tempted to change the color of the car.
It's to cold to work in the shop, I could go out and run the heat but I would rather send the money on parts. I have been researching torque converters, DOD rear tires and exhaust. I plan on running the car in street car class at Cedar Falls, the car has to be street legal.
I had never posted my dyno sheets from my 440s so here is the 500" the thing to remember it has 1967 915 heads on it, don't know how many times I have been told you cant make power with stock heads, yes I could make more power with Trick Flows 270sbut I don't have 2K for them. The 440 has ross 590 gram pistons 12.5 cr., H beam rods And a Comp flat tappet cam and a victor intake. It has a clean idle at 900 rpm. it just sounds like a angry pit bull.

Iron Heads

This 440 was fist built in 1991-92 when aftermarket heads were limited, I think the B1 might have been the only one out there, I remember calling Indy at some point but the guy on the phone was a total butt head so there was no way that I was buying from him. So a pair of 915 heads pocket ported to the templates and port matched, Mopar SS valves 2.14 / 1.81 and Mopar mechanical rockers. That was then, after two refresh's the heads have more blending and new exhaust seats witch aloud opening up under the valve approximately another 1/8', and I'm using Manley long 2.18 / 1.81 valves and Harland Sharp rocker assembly. At this point I like the idea of the iron heads because everyone tells me I can't make power with them, I could make more power with a new set of TF 270s but I can make power with my handy work and a box of stones, bits and flappers. I have pictures of the heads and I'm looking for them I just haven't found them yet. One thing I did ordering pistons was the valve reliefs are for a 7.50 lift cam and 2.18 intake valve, just thinking ahead.

If I had a good set of heads, no cracks good valves etc. I would not hesitate to find HP with a die grinder and time. There is plenty of information out there on head porting, some good some not, you can go to far and lose HP or find water, but iron heads art worth much anyway. Have fun.

That will be good running all in it's self.... You can always upgrade as time and funding permits... Main thing is to have a reliable and dependable fun Hot Rod... Just My 2 cents. :)

It's always been nice for me to have Shane Studley from ( Percision Cylinder Heads) rite in my back yard... Awesome Mopar head Porter... :)
But at any rate Tom. It is always great when you can do-it-yourself and have good result's, I have always been an underdog. But when you win it's great feeling... :)
Hope you get going and go many rounds.... Just take lot's of seat time..... Get out and knock the rust off.... :)
