360 magnum to a833

hello

I am attempting to put a 4spd behind a stroked 360 and I have run in to a problem I hope someone could answer. I am wondering what flywheel to use?

The bell housing I am using is a 1990 5.2 pick up so I can fit the a833.

and do I need a new starter I have one off a 99 5.9 magnum.

Thanks

I really hope you get an answer to this... as I am doing a similar swap but have had little luck. From what research I have done I have found a flywheel by mopar performance that is specifically designed to bolt up older trans with Magnum blocks... very expensive. I am hoping that a more cost effective solution will present itself. Good Luck!

My Engine should be done soon... so I might be able to offer more insight after I get the old 360 out of the truck and do some tinkering with the LA 360 block fly wheel and Magnum 360 engine.

I would think you would use a 5.9L Magnum flywheel but I've never done this swap. Please let us know what you find out.

yeah all my research says the magnum 143 tooth 11 inch...I may buy one and ask about the returning it after I see how it fits if its no good

I had the exact same thought... My issue is the bolt pattern and the difference in balance... LA being internally balanced and Magnum being external.

Both 360 LA and Magnum are external balance. Back of blocks are the same. Just have a machine shop balance the flywheel to magnum.

Use this and once it fits your housing take it to a machine shop and tell him to balance it for use in a 1998 Dodge 2500 5.9L pickup. That will get you the correct weight and the part I gave you is from a 1990 Pickup with 11 inch clutch.

However if you do a stroker magnum just do an internal balance and set flywheel nuetral.

I am not sure where I got the information that the balance was different... between LA and Magnum. Oh well I stand corrected. So my old LA 360 flywheel will bolt up to my Magnum 360 crank, and all I need to do is have it properly balanced?

PK1 Aug 29, 2013 05:24 AM

You are correct. Balance is different!!! But by weight not type. The LA and Magnums are external in OE 360 form. However, you can have a magnum flywheel balanced to replicate that of the weight needed to fit an LA balance and vise versa. The engine
wont know the difference.

The magnum piston is over 100 grams lighter than the LA piston. Ring set is lighter and rod is slightly lighter. Piston pin is lighter too.

Some of the flywheels used are the exact same for both and the part numbers only change because of weight or application.

I strongly recommend internal if you still in the building stages. The magnum bob weight is around 2002g and LA 2150g ish... My 408 on the stand currently spun at 1760g internal balance. She will rev nicely. This shouldnt be overlooked in a 360 stroker IMO. They tend to not like rpm so this will help it.

Good luck with your build.

Awesome info!

slade Aug 29, 2013 06:22 PM

that is awsome info. and dacuda i think your mistaking the 318-340 and the 360 318-340 are internal and 360 is external

Dacuda Aug 30, 2013 11:34 AM

for me the balance dosen't matter yet (but good point slade) as as I am stroking the motor and still need the crank done but I did by a magnum fly wheel and will let you know if it fits a 1990 5.2 4 speed.

Dacuda Aug 30, 2013 04:18 PM

I just finished rough fitting the flywheel and its good. engages the starter and everything so my set up so far is

1999 5.9 stroker magnum
1999 11 inch dodge ram 5.9L gas magnum flywheel 143 tooth (this flywheel is cpu friendly)
1990 dodge d150 5.2L bell housing
1986 a833 4 speed tranny

Is it cable clutch or hydraulic? Just wondering???

slade Aug 31, 2013 01:04 AM

well if he uses the magnum clutch its hydro. the old style would be mechanical ( linkage)

Dacuda Aug 31, 2013 08:48 AM

hydraulic

Nice !!!!!
