On the bottom of the hood if it's the original there should be a information label that has the gvw on it.

Look in the door jamb of the drivers door and see if the tag place says D or W on it.
W400 where the old Ambulance or Paramedic unit like in the movie "Squid 51"
in Emergency... :)

Yup it says w40. Are these trucks rare?

No, Pretty common for City's, State, Fire, and Forestry Departments to have had them back in the day.

1978 W400 Dump

W400 is a 1.25 ton Chassis, it has a longer wheel base than a standard long bed truck but most all other parts will work for a W400.
I have owned two of these truck both were fire trucks.
Update: Purchased a 1977 W400 with dump bed and plow. Truck was a fire truck from Evansville Indiana. So I have now owned three of these trucks

What motor is it?

Hey guys back again. I keep getting conflicting reports about what motor is in this truck. Some people say it's a 400 while others are saying it is a 440. Is there anyway to tell besides decoding the vin? Here are some pics of the motor maybe someone can put this to bed. Thanks!

Look at front top of engine behind water pump if there is a rectangle machined surface it is a 440. It will be stamped with 440 and some other information. If this machined surface is not there it is a 400 ci engine

Bottom dollar it's a 440.
