Air Conditioning System Replacement

I have a 1986 Dodge D150 pickup. The A/C does not work. The R12 refrigerant is either low or completely leaked out. The compressor clutch will engage when the low pressure valve is shorted. Nothing shows in the dryer sight glass. All of the A/C components appear to be original. Since I just bought the truck I don't know when the A/C last worked. Should I replace all of the A/C components (compressor, dryer, condenser, expansion valve) before I even try to recharge refrigerant with R134a? I'm afraid that I would just waste the cost of a recharge with the old components in place. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Put some guages on it to see if there is any presure left in the system. Then vacuum the system and recover anything thats left. At a minimum, I would replace the dryer and the o-rings on the lines. Inspect the lines for damage. Replenish the system and check for leaks.

You need to put it under a vacuum and see if it holds vacuum

X10 if it holds vacuum over night it probably leaked out over time.I would replace the reciever dryer. (which by the way you have to anyway when switching to R134a) and add Pag oil 4oz. min. and see what happens...A few years ago there was a company selling Max Cool, and you didnt have to do anything just add and go. it was compatable with both and made the A/C 10-20* colder at the ducts...It said tracer dye on the box to save you the Hazmat charge they were located in California..The stuff was great...Bill:yikes:
