318 Water Pump
I have a dodge 318 from a 68 charger. I purchased a new water pump and switched from ac to non ac. When I went to reattach the water pump and crank pulleys (came with a four groove crank and long neck single groove water pump pulley) there was a serious mis alignment. The water pump pulley is about an inch closer to the engine block. I made sure the hamonic balancer was full fastened and purchased CVF racing's pulley set for a 68 driver side exit (2 groove crank and single groove water pump) and still no help. Clled CVF and verified numbers and even they are confused. Wat am I doing wrong? Is therea long neck water pump that I need to purchase? The space is too big for a spacer.

What are you trying to put that in? A truck of some type or maybe an rv? The pumps are usually aluminum for the LA block. Cast iron ones like you have are usually on the earlier 313-318 blocks (called y blocks, poly, whatever) The cast iron timing cover on those engines was different and if memory serves thinner than the aluminum where the pump bolts to the timing cover and then block so yes nothing would line up.
how to fix this? get a thin fan spacer from a ford, I know but it fits, shave it till you get the right thickness for your belts to line up OR get the proper water pump up to you.

You have a timing cover and water pump for a 1965-1968 318. I know cause I have the same one on my 1968 318. In 1970 they changed pumps to aluminum and the timing cover was also changed to allow the pump to suck water from the other side. You can't run 1970 or later pulleys on that pump they won't match up. One fix is to switch the timing cover and pump to a 1970's style. That will however change the bypass hose size and switch the side of which the pump sucks water from the radaitor.

Great help guys. I am loving the information.
Heres the kicker though. I have the 1968 chrome set up from CVF racing in the picture. It doesnt line up. Now are you sure this is the correct timing cover? The pump I bought through advanced auto was a 1968. The only thing I do not have positive information about to back up its year is the timing cover. So is that the problem?

The earlier 313-318 was timed on the passenger side while the later was timed on the drivers side so that is gonna be fun to setup now. There is a bolt on bracket to setup timing marks on the passenger side but at the moment I forget what it is from.
For the belts use the spacer between the pump and pulley fords had some on theirs.

I would bet that CVF racing is not a real Mopar company. Take a look at Bouchellon Preformance for a Mopar company making Mopar stuff.

and the 1969 and earlier use a timing pointer bolted to the timing cover. 1970 and later have 10 degrees before and after in the casting of the cover.
