Big Block transmission
Is the A833 the right transmission I will need to put on the 440 in my 74 roadrunner. I was gonna go with a 727 but I'll need a tranny cooler and all new lines. The car came with a factory 3 speed. If anyone can help it would be great thanks.

The 18 spline A833 would be the stronger 4 speed (I believe it is called a Hemi 4 speed), but I currently have a 23 spline A833 behind my 440 and it is working fine. Keep in mind that I do not race or otherwise abuse my car much (I can't afford to!).
I think the A833 will fit behind any engine as long as you can get the proper bell housing.

Actually the 3 speed in this car is a floor shift which I think was kinda rare in these cars thats why i'm keeping the motor and tranny, I'm not planning on racing with this car either, the motor is just bored 40 over and rv cam with stock heads so it's not that wild of a motor so the 23 spline should work.

Also does my crank shaft have to be cut specifically for a manual transmission or auto tranny. Someone just told me that it did, if its true its the first time ive ever heard of that.

no it dont need to be cut or bored/honed or any of that i have heard ppl talk about that nonsense too. just need the the pilot bearing..wouldnt make sense for chrysler to make 2 diff cranks..not very cost effective

What I ran in to was when I went to put my A833 behind my 440, the tip of the input shaft was too short. What I heard was that engines designed with the automatic to go behind them did not have a deep enough hole if you converted to a 4 speed, so rather than have the crank machined to accept the input shaft, people just cut the tip off the shaft to make it work....around an inch or so.
So for my car, I had to buy a new input shaft, and a friend took the tranny apart and installed it for me. So apparently my tranny had been installed behind an automatic engine and the tip had been cut.

Thanks for all the info, I haven't really decided what i'm gonna do yet. The motors all done and all I need is to build that transmission than i'm ready.

Thanks, Also I'm guessing I'll need new tranny mounts/cross member, linkage, shifter and all that jazz if I'm changing from the 3 speed to the 4 speed?
