Golden Lion

I was fortunate enough to find an old Chrysler that I believe to be very rare, but I am not having any luck finding information on it. If anyone has any information or can point me in the right direction, it would be great.

It is a Golden Lion, but it appears to have a 383 RB (yeah, I know...). The motor has a crossram intake and the red valve covers say "Golden Lion 383." The car has more automatic accessories than I can count, and a pushbuton automatic trans. I think it is a 1957, but I could be wrong.

I know this isn't much, but that's why I'm looking for more information! Specifically, what years did Chrysler make the 383 RB amd how can you tell the difference between the RB and the B?

welcome to the forum

i thought that the 383 RB engine was made in the early-mid sixties in canada because of their taxes on bigger engines

the RB engine came out in the early sixties

They were produced mainly in Canada, but Chrysler supposedly put a few (VERY few) in the Golden Lions between '58 and '60. The only reason I think it may be the super rare 383 RB is because the only post-firepower hemi (late 50s) golden lions I have found have the 413 RB. I'm not even sure they were offered with the standard 383 B. It's deffinately a 383, though, because like I said before, it's clearly printed on the valve covers.

These cars were offered with so many options. I read in Mopar Power Mag that some were even offered adjustable air-bag rear suspension. This particular car even has a power adjustable rear-view mirror!!! That has to be the most pointless, but craziest option I've ever seen.

yes the RB 383 was offerd for only 3 years 58-59&60 you can tell an rb by the raised pad thats just in front of the valley pan

Polaradude 01-28-2009 04:00 AM

The Golden Lion was produced in 59-60, It's a 383 RB block with a casting # 2120329.

Thanks, thats exactly what I needed to know. I'm supposed to pick the car up soon and I'll check it out when I do.

Does anybody know how many Lions they made with the 383RB? Also, what is the approx. value of this car? The body is completely straight with minimal rust, but the interior is nothing but springs and rat's nests. Everything on the car looks original and the only thing it is missing is the two quads, air filters, and virturally everything made out of rubber. It really is in great shape considering it has been sitting under a tree for god knows how long. The gold paint is even mostly intact and it has big red lions painted down both sides. I have not been able to find a picture of one painted like this, which leads me to believe it may be a special edition or something.

I'm really excited about finding this old chrysler, and I'll try to get some pictures up as soon as possible.

ya, thats a windsor

Polaradude 01-30-2009 03:30 AM

The rarest of the "Lions" is a 390 Hp model that was exported to be the power plant in French Facel-Vegas, if you can believe that.

67 GTX 01-30-2009 08:56 AM

aaron501420, do you have any pics of your car?

mopar380 12-24-2009 01:00 PM

The RB 383 engine was never built in Canada. Canada only had the LB383 engines. The RB 383 was used only in 1959-1960 on US built Chrysler Windsor and Saratoga. The Windsor received a 2 barrel, while the Saratoga received a 4-barrel. If your car has cross rams they were added later. The Chryslers with cross rams all used th3 RB 413 engine. Dodges, DeSoto and Plymouth that were equipped with Cross Rams had a 361, LB 383, or a 413 engine but none were ever installed on a RB 383.

Golden Lion is not a model name. I think it just refers to what Chrysler called some of their engines in the late 50s-early 60s; 361-383-413.

All models, Newport, Windsor, Saratoga, New Yorker had Golden Lion Engines during that period.

What could make it more rare than other coveted Mopars from that period: accessories/options and lack of rust.

Check out "Mopar380"s website http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/category-view.asp
It covers those years and the people on the forum can provide all the infomation that you can handle.

The machined pad should be stamped 38 for 383 or 41 for 413 if I remember correctly. as my 426 wedge was stamped 42.
