Help with Winch?
Can any one tell me the proper way to test what has failed on a winch? I would like to avoid just throwing parts at it to try to fix it. Is there a voltage drop.. or resistance test i can perform on the motor? Any help would be greatly appreciated
Thanks,

I press the switch to engage the winch and I get nothing. No solenoid click no motor whine nothing. I had some issues with it when i first got it that this would happen occasionally and I could do some tapping and wiggling of wires and then it would work. I got very stuck one night and got her pretty hot... now I get nothing when i hit the switch. I have checked the leads for the switch they are making properly and I have tried to apply 12 V directly to solenoid terminals.. still i get nothing.

check all connections for power.
check all grounds including on the solenoid.
check to see if you have 12v at the solenoid thin trip lead when you hit the button.
if you jump the solenoid with booster cables and the motor does not turn and you have a bad ground, the motor brushed might be bad. a started rebuilder might be able to rebuild it.
one last thought is to check if the winch has a safety cut off, or breaker to limit overheating damage.
