Work

So At work I need to use some measuring tooling from time to time. I let Engineering borrow one of my tools for a few hours last week. Well I never got it back and I needed it this morning. So I went to get into the Engineering area and all the doors are locked. So I grabbed an 8' ladder and climbed over the wall (no ceiling), grabbed my stuff and walked out the door.

Well apparently someone went to the safety committee and said something because I got an email about an hour later saying that I was being warned not to do that again or I would be writen up....

Safety - "You did not follow the proper procedure for jumping a nine foor wall."
Me - "ok..... What is the proper procedure for jumping a nine foot wall?"
Safety - "Um..... well...... I don't know. I don't think we have one."
Me - "So the next time I jump a nine foot wall I will be writen up for not following a procedure that we do not have?"
Safety - "Well, you can't just go and be doing that sort of thing. You could get seriously hurt."
Me - "If I had any thought in my mind that there was some posibility that I might get hurt, I wouldn't do it. Isn't it company policy that if an employee sees another empolyee doing something that could be dangerous/hazardous to them and/or others that they stop the employee? So shouldn't you go threaten that employee for not following "proper procedure"?"
Safety - "..........."

HaHa! I've got a million of those stories. At Chrysler you must wear a safety harness and lanyard whenever you work more than 6ft in the air. However, the lanyard is 6ft long and the static bundle is another 3ft! Reminds me of the Wile E. Coyote parachute that deploys upon impact!

I was our Safety Director for awhile, till I started calling it the "Liability Reduction Program". They also didn't like it that I didn't pay much attention to their reports and required postings. Liked it even less when I told them I'd never seen anyone hurt from lack of a report, but I'd seen several injured from things I was correcting, like 100 year old wooden boards on a viaduct we had to walk across. I finally got tired of the BS and told them I quit.

Well I was on vacation this week and heard that one of the big wigs heard that I was on the new Safety Commitee and his jaw just dropped. I guess thats better than him flipping out or saying 'No. He is not to be on there."

I have been telling family and friends and they all laugh. Guess you would have to hangout with me to see how "unsafe" I can be.

Ya that's a good one eh? I climb scaffold on a regular basis and it works out that if you are 6' tall you have to be tied off 18' feet from the ground for the harness to even work. Everywhere you work they want you tied off at anything over 6'. It's total Coyote and the Acme harness. There's some stupid sh$t out there for regs.

Why's that? So there are no witnesses as you pick yourself off the ground or so you dont fall on them and hurt them?

I don't mind if there are people around. someone would have to laugh at me as I fall, I just don't need a hand holding the ladders together that I screwed together.

I'm a form worker

mate how ridiculous is safety we have to endure . seriously if we did all the safety stuff that we were meant to the jobs would blow right of budget & take for ever . so ya have to wait for safety man or hahaha woman to **** off before doing our dangerous stunts . the worst thing is we sign off for every possible injury . so i you get a splinter = weren't wearing gloves . something in your eye weren't wearing 2 pairs of safety goggles that's right 2 pairs . now this one company wants us to were a id sorta card around our necks . its only a matter of time before someone gets hung up from one of these stupid things . I'm riding out a injured hand / wrist at the moment that i can't report because of job security , my hands been bruised & still has a lump on my wrist joint for over two weeks now . oh well I'm just lucky 2 be working right now . my works in a short list of 5 company's for a new hospital 12 months work for 50 guys so fingers crossed . about 120 guys have been laid off since our big boss died last year , but i was told by the new big boss yesterday that everybody else is safe & were getting a 3% pay rise & getting back paid till January this year . I've been doing concrete patching for the last 6 months the job completely sux it will kill me early for sure but I'm working & I'm half way into rebuilding my Ute so oh well . there's my 2 cents worth .
