well small blocks are made to fit in there while big blocks get pretty snug block to firewall problems header clearence and steering comes into play here dusters are really tight in the engine bay but with time its really easly done and schumachar or somthing like that makes all the mounts so have at it a 440 is the cool thing to do

Schumacher makes mounts and headers for a big block in an a-body with or without power steering. you just need to do some minor cutting on the driver part of the K-frame where the mount is, you need to cut a notch for the oil pump to fit in
A big block fits in no problem, just snug.
I'd be a 440/727 8 3/4 with 3:23's - 3:91's if you want to do alot of street driving..
Just my 2 cents

Twister,
A lot of picking the right motor for your Duster is dependant on how you will be driving the car and what it is going to be used for. Are you looking for something that is powerful and fast? A tire burning machine? A cruiser with or without trips to the strip?
The nice thing about having a 318 and maybe upgrading to a 340 or 360 later on is that you already have a tranny that will bolt up and whatever you do for bolt ons to the 318, you can use with the 340 and 360. You'll want to see what you have for a rear axle and upgrade it or swap it out for a stronger unit depending on the power range you want. Also, look into suspension upgrades that that will help you to transfer some of that power to the ground and give you a comfortable ride.

Welcome! Yes, it all depends on how you will use the car. If you plan to drive it alot, I would stay with the small block for mileage reasons. You can build a real small block screamer that would be reasonable on gas unless you get it to it. In my opinion, the big block will almost always user more gas, and with gas approaching $4/gal or possibly more, it is something to think about.
