Pro Stock Qualifying Notes, Session #1
By Larry Sullivan

CONCORD, N.C. - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Pro Stock at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, Third annual O'Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:

Right Lane: Dave Connolly Runs 6.677/208.07, Now #1

2:46 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 88 degrees, relative humidity 45 percent, barometer 29.32 inches, adjusted altitude 3,369 feet, track temperature 124 degrees.

This is Connolly's first outing this season, after almost a year and a half, and he will run a partial schedule for the rest of the year and into the 2011 season.
With no other runs to gauge against, this looked like a good run - now it's "wait and see." I't hot, but dry, so the normally-aspirated engines may do okay despite the 88-degree air temperatures.

Left Lane: Bob Glidden Runs 6.738/206.86, Now #3
Right Lane: Vincent Nobile Runs 6.736/206.35, Now #2

A pair of Mustangs, about half-a-tenth back from Connolly's run and more than one mph slower.

Left Lane: Bob Benza Runs 6.681/207.82, Now #2
Right Lane: John Gaydosh Jr Runs 6.934/200.08, Now #5

Good run for Benza, another "wait and see" time, with top speed so far.

Left Lane: Steve Spiess Runs 6.698/207.53, Now #4
Right Lane: Ronnie Humphrey Runs 6.652/208.52, Now #1

Humphrey's car sports his new Summit "Genuine Hot Rod Hardware" sponsorship this weekend.

good runs in both lanes, Humphrey is #1 for now, replacing Connolly.

Left Lane: Vinnie Deceglie Runs 6.675/208.55, Now #3
Right Lane: Larry Morgan Runs 6.664/208.20, Now #2

Morgan and Deceglie slide into the order right ahead of Connolly on good-looking runs.

Left Lane: Warren Johnson Runs 6.810/177.30, Now #10
Right Lane: Bob Yonke Runs 6.699/206.64, Now #7

WJ and KJ have picked up some new sponsorship, from Grant Motorsports LLC. It's a multipurpose motorsports garage in Tooele, Utah. Also, something new for Yonke, he bought the car formerly driven by Rickie Jones, who announced recently he was moving away from Pro Stock.

Left Lane: Kurt Johnson Runs 6.709/206.70, Now #9
Right Lane: V. Gaines Runs 6.668/208.68, Now #3

Good runs for both and we now have a 6.810 bump time (Warren Johnson).

Left Lane: Rodger Brogdon Runs 6.672/208.20, Now #5
Right Lane: Johnny Gray Runs 6.661/207.82, Now #2

These two were looking to bump WJ and Bob Glidden - that would look good in any driver's resume.

They accomplished their objective, both well into the field, Gray all the way up to second.
Now Vincent Nobile is on the bump at 6.736.

Left Lane: Shane Gray Runs 6.666/208.30, Now #4
Right Lane: Ron Krisher Runs 6.677/208.30, Now #8

Krisher's car made a small move to the right on the launch, both were 1.00 for the first 60 feet. Both bumped in, putting Nobile and KJ on the outside and Yonke on the bump spot at 6.699.

Left Lane: Jason Line Runs 6.633/209.14, Now #1
Right Lane: Greg Anderson Runs 6.657/208.52, Now #3

The two Summit teammates were looking to displace third teammate Humphrey from the top of the order.

Line had the best 60-foot time so far, a 0.990, while Anderson's car moved around a bit and clocked a 1.003 short time. Line took the top spot from Humphrey, Anderson moved in right behind Humphrey for a 1-2-3 lineup (for now).

Left Lane: Jeg Coughlin Runs 6.674/208.14, Now #9
Right Lane: Greg Stanfield Runs 6.700/206.99, Now #16

Stanfield's car made a couple big moves to the left on the launch and that cost him. Coughlin's launch was better, with a 0.996 60-foot time, but he also lost a ,lot of time early in the run and squeaked into the field.

Left Lane: Allen Johnson Runs 6.644/209.14, Now #2
Right Lane: Mike Edwards Runs 6.652/208.84, Now #3

Last pair and these two should shake up the entire lineup...if they can get off the line cleanly.

Both posted 0.99 60-foot times - good, but not the best of the round, and Line held on to the top spot by a hundredth of a second. AJ tied Line for top speed of the round, Edwards posted the third-fastest speed. That put Vinnie Deceglie on the bump spot at 6.675 going into the second session today.

Round 2 Qualifying

Fri, 17 Sep 2010, 07:54 PM

Pro Stock Qualifying Notes, Session #2
By Larry Sullivan

CONCORD, N.C. - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Pro Stock at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, Third annual O'Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:

Left Lane: John Gaydosh Jr Runs 6.875/200.14, Now #23; Best prior run: 6.934/200.08, Was #23

7:11 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 86 degrees, relative humidity 47 percent, barometer 29.30 inches, adjusted altitude 3,263 feet, track temperature 104 degrees.

The weather has improved slightly since the first session and it is likely that you can just about throw those results away. Vinnie Deceglie is on the bump spot at 6.675.
Gaydosh made an improved run, is still short of the bump time.

Left Lane: Vincent Nobile Runs 6.697/206.61, Now #17; Best prior run: 6.736/206.35, Was #20
Right Lane: Warren Johnson Runs 6.676/208.23, Now #13; Best prior run: 6.810/177.30, Was #22

Both drivers improved a bunch over their first run today, neither made the provisional field.

Left Lane: Greg Stanfield Runs 6.663/207.11, Now #7; Best prior run: 6.700/206.99, Was #20
Right Lane: Bob Glidden Runs 8.186/123.11, Now #22; Best prior run: 6.738/206.86, Was #22

Indy winner Stanfield improved enough to get into the field - that may not last through the round. Glidden's car made a big move right off the starting line, and he shut it off well before the stripe.

Left Lane: Bob Yonke Runs 6.710/205.51, Now #21; Best prior run: 6.699/206.64, Was #21
Right Lane: Kurt Johnson Runs 6.697/206.95, Now #18; Best prior run: 6.697/206.95, Was #18

Yonke has been trying to buy this car from Rickie Jones for three months, finally closed the deal right after Indy.

No help for either driver - KJ improved a bit, but stayed outside the field.

Left Lane: Dave Connolly Runs 6.637/208.65, Now #2; Best prior run: 6.677/208.07, Was #16
Right Lane: Steve Spiess Runs 6.673/207.24, Now #13; Best prior run: 6.698/207.53, Was #20

Connolly jumped all the way up to second spot, nice run. Spiess improved nicely, came up one spot short of the field.

Now Rodger Brogdon is on the bump spot at 6.672.

Left Lane: Ron Krisher Runs 6.637/208.52, Now #3; Best prior run: 6.677/208.30, Was #17
Right Lane: Bob Benza Runs 6.661/207.50, Now #9; Best prior run: 6.681/207.82, Was #18

Double-bump, knocking out Brogdon and V. Gaines.

Left Lane: V. Gaines Runs 6.654/208.52, Now #7; Best prior run: 6.668/208.68, Was #13
Right Lane: Vinnie Deceglie Runs 6.667/208.17, Now #14; Best prior run: 6.675/208.55, Was #17

Shane Gray was on the bump spot at 6.666 after the double-bump.

Gaines bumped Gray, Deceglie came upo short of the field.

Left Lane: Larry Morgan Runs 6.662/206.86, Now #12; Best prior run: 6.664/208.20, Was #12
Right Lane: Jeg Coughlin Runs 6.656/207.82, Now #8; Best prior run: 6.674/208.14, Was #17

That put Morgan on the bump spot at 6.664. Coughlin appeared to be almost a sure bet to get in, Victor Cagnazzi predicting a "fifty" during the session. Well, it wasn't a "fifty, but Coughlin got in and Morgan improved just enough to stay on the bump spot, Greg Stanfield getting bumped from the field instead. But that is not a safe spot, there are a few "hitters" left to run yet.

Left Lane: Johnny Gray Runs 6.647/208.39, Now #5; Best prior run: 6.661/207.82, Was #10
Right Lane: Rodger Brogdon Runs 6.652/207.72, Now #8; Best prior run: 6.672/208.20, Was #16

For example, Rodger Brogdon. Gray moved way up the list, Brogdon bumped Morgan, and now Bob Benza is on the bump spot at 6.661.

Left Lane: Greg Anderson Runs 6.624/208.62, Now #1; Best prior run: 6.657/208.52, Was #11
Right Lane: Shane Gray Runs 6.646/207.94, Now #6; Best prior run: 6.666/208.30, Was #15

These two should shake the field up again ... if they make good runs.

They did and they did. Anderson went to #1 and Gray bumped Benza. Now Jeg Coughlin is on the bump spot at 6.656.

Left Lane: Ronnie Humphrey Runs 6.637/208.71, Now #3; Best prior run: 6.652/208.52, Was #9
Right Lane: Allen Johnson Runs 6.638/208.68, Now #6; Best prior run: 6.644/209.14, Was #5

It appears that the remaining cars are already in the field, so Coughlin is safe until tomorrow, when the field size will increase to 16 and all the cars outside the top twelve will start all over again. Humphrey improved nicely and moved up the ladder, moving AJ down a spot.

Left Lane: Mike Edwards Runs 6.631/207.78, Now #2; Best prior run: 6.652/208.84, Was #9
Right Lane: Jason Line Runs 6.637/208.91, Now #3; Best prior run: 6.633/209.14, Was #2

Last pair. Edwards made a nice run to take over the second spot, Line failed to improve and ended up third.

Round 4 Qualifying

Sat, 18 Sep 2010, 03:46 PM

Pro Stock Qualifying Notes, Final Session
By Larry Sullivan

CONCORD, N.C. - Notes from final, round 4 qualifying in Pro Stock at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, Third annual O'Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:

Left Lane: Vincent Nobile Runs 6.696/206.61, Now #18; Best prior run: 13.486/63.18, Was #20

3:11 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 83 degrees, relative humidity 47 percent, barometer 29.46 inches, adjusted altitude 2,813 feet, track temperature 127 degrees. It's going to be a little tougher to bump into the field in this session - the air is warmer and the track is hotter. Six teams will go away disappointed this afternoon. Kurt Johnson is on the bump spot at 6.657.

This time around Nobile's car went right down the groove, with a career-best speed, but he missed the field by a couple spots.

Left Lane: John Gaydosh Jr Runs 6.867/200.14, Now #20; Best prior run: 6.875/200.23, Was #20

Gaydosh's car is a tribute to our military veterans and the car has been signed by hundreds of veterans so far.

He made a good run, but was not quick enough.

Left Lane: Bob Yonke Runs 6.723/206.16, Now #20; Best prior run: 6.723/206.48, Was #19
Right Lane: Steve Spiess Runs 6.703/207.24, Now #19; Best prior run: 15.811/47.57, Was #22

Both had a little too much tire spin on the launch, neither came close to making the field.

Left Lane: Larry Morgan Runs 6.648/207.66, Now #13; Best prior run: 6.657/208.84, Was #15
Right Lane: Bob Glidden Runs 6.734/206.64, Now #21; Best prior run: 15.111/55.82, Was #22

Glidden's car went to the left on the launch. He brought it back to the groove smoothly, but came up short of the bump time. Morgan made a nice run to move a couple spots further in into the field.

Left Lane: V. Gaines Runs 6.652/208.62, Now #14; Best prior run: 6.654/208.52, Was #14
Right Lane: Bob Benza Runs 6.677/207.85, Now #17; Best prior run: 6.661/207.50, Was #17

Benza is the last not-qualified car in the lanes. Benza's car did almost the same thing as Glidden's, with a quick move to the left on the launch, and produced the same result - he did not make the field. Gaines improved a couple thousandths, not enough to move him up the ladder.

Left Lane: Greg Stanfield Runs 6.681/207.15, Now #10; Best prior run: 6.638/208.17, Was #10
Right Lane: Kurt Johnson Runs 6.674/207.59, Now #16; Best prior run: 6.657/208.30, Was #16

KJ survived all threats and is in the field, but he probably did not want to meet the #1 qualifier in round one.

Johnson went right down the groove, didn't do much better than those who went to the left on the launch. For that matter, Stanfield also went right down the track and lost ground.

Left Lane: Johnny Gray Runs 6.668/207.02, Now #9; Best prior run: 6.629/208.78, Was #9
Right Lane: Jeg Coughlin Runs 6.943/169.55, Now #15; Best prior run: 6.656/207.82, Was #15

Coughlin's car lost a lot of time in the first 330 feet and you just can't make up for that on the top end. Gray made the third-quickest run of the session so far.

Left Lane: Ronnie Humphrey Runs 6.650/209.01, Now #8; Best prior run: 6.628/209.14, Was #8
Right Lane: Vinnie Deceglie Runs 6.687/208.26, Now #12; Best prior run: 6.648/208.59, Was #12

Both cars shook a bit early in the run, Deceglie's car wagging its tail back and forth several times. Humphrey made a strong run, second-quickest of the session so far, with the fastest speed so far.

Left Lane: Ron Krisher Runs 6.646/208.75, Now #6; Best prior run: 6.619/209.39, Was #6
Right Lane: Warren Johnson Runs 6.639/208.71, Now #11; Best prior run: 6.645/209.36, Was #11

Both cars had good short times, 0.99 in both lanes, and they made the two quickest runs of the session so far.

Left Lane: Greg Anderson Runs 6.613/209.04, Now #4; Best prior run: 6.613/209.10, Was #4
Right Lane: Shane Gray Runs 6.672/207.50, Now #7; Best prior run: 6.627/208.59, Was #7

Anderson matched the best 60-foot time of the session so far, Ron Krisher's 0.991, then matched his own best run of the weekend to reset low ET for the session, He also nipped Humphrey by 0.03 mph for top speed of the session. Gray made a good run, his time in the middle of the pack for the session.

Left Lane: Dave Connolly No Time, Now #3; Best prior run: 6.610/209.10, Was #3
Right Lane: Rodger Brogdon Runs 6.684/207.56, Now #5; Best prior run: 6.617/208.59, Was #5

Connolly broke after launching and was timed out before reaching the stripe. Brogdon lost a lot of time early in the run and also joined the pack.

Left Lane: Mike Edwards Runs 6.630/208.68, Now #2; Best prior run: 6.607/209.79, Was #2
Right Lane: Jason Line Runs 6.623/208.81, Now #1; Best prior run: 6.604/209.56, Was #1

Good runs in both lanes, but Greg Anderson stays low for the session, followed by Line and Edwards.
