Funny Car Qualifying Notes, Session #1
By David Gerard

CHANDLER, Ariz. - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Funny Car at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 27th annual NHRA Arizona Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:

Right Lane: Alexis DeJoria Runs No Time/No Speed, Now #1

2:49 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 89 degrees, relative humidity 24 percent, barometer 28.56 inches, adjusted altitude 3,805 feet, track temperature 129 degrees.

De Joria will make a single, as Todd Lesenko sits out the session.

The Solara has a lazy leave, starts to shake after the 60 foot lights, and kicks the tires about 100 feet out to coast on down the track. She won't get a time or speed becuse of timing problems.

Right Lane: Melanie Troxel Runs 4.478/219.22, Now #1

Diehl doesn't show either.

Troxel is back in the cool In-N-Out livery this week. The Burgermobile has a terrific looking 0.895 leave and is trucking down the track until just after the 660 lights, where all the pipes go wet. Blower belt?

Left Lane: Jim Head Runs 7.387/84.18, Now #4
Right Lane: Paul Lee Runs 5.478/125.46, Now #2

Dueling smokers!

Lee is away first and makes a safe leave until just after the 330 lights and then has the tires start to smoke.

Head's Solara was a little slower down low, but started to drift out of the groove, towards the wall, before his tires were up in smoke too.

Left Lane: Tony Pedregon Runs 7.195/87.04, Now #5
Right Lane: Johnny Gray Runs 4.310/277.49, Now #1

Gray tiptoes down the track, after some shake down low to get the honor of "almost a full pass" and the new number one spot.

Pedregon's pass was a lot like Head's with a drift and tire smoke before the 330 lights.

Johnny Gray's incremental times: 60ft-0.916 sec., 330ft-2.382, 660ft-3.439/239.36 mph.

Left Lane: Tim Wilkerson Runs 4.366/271.84, Now #2
Right Lane: John Force Runs 4.959/242.54, Now #4

Wilkerson's Mustang is sporting a wild "BIG Website Makeover" wrap this weekend and has his hot track skills working. The engine was happy until the top end, where t lost at least one cylinder to miss the top spot.

Force's Castrol GTX Ford was right behind him until about the 330 lights, where the tires started to smoke.

Tim Wilkerson's incremental times: 60ft-0.915 sec., 330ft-2.419, 660ft-3.487/240.42 mph.

Left Lane: Jeff Arend Runs 7.941/77.98, Now #10
Right Lane: Bob Tasca III Runs 6.902/106.09, Now #7

Well, Tasca gave it every effort to get a better spot in round two qualifying after heavy tire smoke early. He was on and off the pedal several times to take the current #7 spot.

Arend's DHL Solara was too strong for the track and kicked the tires shortly after the 60 foot lights.

Left Lane: Ron Capps Runs 7.575/76.55, Now #11
Right Lane: Jack Beckman Runs 4.956/165.05, Now #4

DSR Team-mates to the line.

The left lane steals another strong leave, as Capps has a good leave, followed quickly by tire smoke.

Beckman's Charger was soft off the line and looked to be on a good pass until the back-end stepped out near the 660 lights and... Yes, smoked the tires!

Left Lane: Robert Hight Runs 5.334/201.34, Now #7
Right Lane: Cruz Pedregon Runs 4.390/261.07, Now #3

Jeff Arend is on the bump spot at 7.941.

I would have never thought that a 4.31 would be number one at this spot in qualifying. REALLY tough conditions out there!

Pedregon gave it a valiant effort, but the car slowed too much down track to score better than the current #3 spot on the ladder.

Hight's Mustang was done before the 330 lights and he nailed the throttle a couple of more times to get the current #7 spot.

Left Lane: Mike Neff Runs 4.349/278.06, Now #2
Right Lane: Matt Hagan Runs 4.409/275.34, Now #5

Jim Head is on the bump spot at 7.387.

Two great looking passes and still no runs better than Gray's. Hagan had a little better numbers until the 330 and then Neff's Mustang had the beans to pull ahead and take the two valuable Bonus Points for the session. That ties him with Hagan right now.

Mike Neff's incremental times: 60ft-0.931 sec., 330ft-2.421, 660ft-3.481/240.81 mph.
Matt Hagan's incremental times: 60ft-0.927 sec., 330ft-2.450, 660ft-3.528/237.21 mph.

3:24 p.m. Johnny Gray stayed number one and Bob Tasca III is on the bump spot at 6.902.

Funny Car Qualifying Notes, Session #2
By David Gerard

CHANDLER, Ariz. - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Funny Car at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 27th annual NHRA Arizona Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:

Left Lane: Alexis DeJoria Runs 4.320/274.27, Now #2; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Todd Lesanko Runs 4.342/282.48, Now #3; No Prior Run

5:19 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 89 degrees, relative humidity 16 percent, barometer 28.50 inches, adjusted altitude 3,748 feet, track temperature 114 degrees.

Just a little cooler for this session.

DeJoria's times from session one were DQ'ed, due to timing problems with the computer system.

The car sounds really weird with a very high sharp sounding "idle". Didn't seem to hurt much though, as both cars get away clean and score ET's that move them to near the top of the ladder.

This bodes well for the rest of the field!

Alexis DeJoria's incremental times: 60ft-0.912 sec., 330ft-2.387, 660ft-3.440/239.44 mph.
Todd Lesenko's incremental times: 60ft-0.912 sec., 330ft-2.405, 660ft-3.476/238.47 mph.

Left Lane: Bob Tasca III Runs 4.322/282.72, Now #3; Best prior run: 6.902/106.09, Was #13
Right Lane: Jeff Diehl Runs 5.819/123.69, Now #14; No Prior Run

Paul Lee is on the bump spot at 5.478.

Diehl joins the festivities this round too. he has the better times down low, but the car drifts towards the center line and out of the groove before he clicks it off.

Tasca runs almost a full pass and moves well up the ladder to the new #3 spot.

Bob Tasca III's incremental times: 60ft-0.919 sec., 330ft-2.399, 660ft-3.457/239.70 mph.

Left Lane: Paul Lee Runs 4.335/287.17, Now #4; Best prior run: 5.478/125.46, Was #13
Right Lane: Jeff Arend Runs 4.376/276.80, Now #8; Best prior run: 7.941/77.98, Was #18

Two clean and straight passes and another set of big improvements into the field. Lee gets the best of it and runs into the top half of the field.

Paul Lee's incremental times: 60ft-0.937 sec., 330ft-2.429, 660ft-3.484/244.16 mph.
Jeff Arend's incremental times: 60ft-0.913 sec., 330ft-2.412, 660ft-3.492/234.53 mph.

Left Lane: John Force Runs 10.330/64.05, Now #13; Best prior run: 4.959/242.54, Was #13
Right Lane: Ron Capps Runs 6.372/108.12, Now #16; Best prior run: 7.575/76.55, Was #18

Jack Beckman is on the bump spot at 4.956.

No big improvements for these two.

Force is away second, but the first to start to smoke the tires near the 100 foot area.

Capps was stronger off the line and then has the Charger start to move around near the 330 lights. The tires are quickly up in smoke and he has to lift. He still moves up to the #16 spot.

Left Lane: Jack Beckman Runs 4.279/284.45, Now #2; Best prior run: 4.956/165.05, Was #12
Right Lane: Jim Head Runs 4.238/289.07, Now #1; Best prior run: 7.387/84.18, Was #18

Two full passes and our first two into the twenties.

Beckman's car was quicker for the first half of the track, but Head's Solara started to thunders at that point and flies on down the track and into the new top spot.

Jack Beckman's incremental times: 60ft-0.907 sec., 330ft-2.377, 660ft-3.425/243.63 mph.
Jim Head's incremental times: 60ft-0.924 sec., 330ft-2.385, 660ft-3.408/250.64 mph.

Left Lane: Melanie Troxel Runs 4.405/234.98, Now #12; Best prior run: 4.478/219.22, Was #13
Right Lane: Tony Pedregon Runs 4.456/214.45, Now #14; Best prior run: 7.195/87.04, Was #18

Two more good runs and Troxel bumps into the field with a clean pass to the finish line. Pedregon got a full pass too, but misses the bump.

Melanie Troxel's incremental times: 60ft-0.907 sec., 330ft-2.389, 660ft-3.462/238.81 mph.
Tony Pedregon's incremental times: 60ft-0.911 sec., 330ft-2.376, 660ft-3.426/236.01 mph.

Left Lane: Matt Hagan Runs 4.294/264.55, Now #3; Best prior run: 4.409/275.34, Was #13
Right Lane: Robert Hight Runs 4.368/278.46, Now #11; Best prior run: 5.334/201.34, Was #16

Hagan sacrifices some pistons to the fuel gods and it's worth it to move The DieHard car ten spots up the ladder and into the current #3 spot.

Hight made a clean pass into the field, but couldn't match Hagen's times to move into the field. He won't get bumped tonight though.

Matt Hagan's incremental times: 60ft-0.909 sec., 330ft-2.369, 660ft-3.393/242.89 mph.
Robert Hight's incremental times: 60ft-0.916 sec., 330ft-2.419, 660ft-3.493/237.75 mph.

Left Lane: Cruz Pedregon Runs 4.215/296.37, Now #1; Best prior run: 4.390/261.07, Was #13
Right Lane: Tim Wilkerson Runs 4.315/283.91, Now #6; Best prior run: 4.366/271.84, Was #10

Jeff Arend is on the bump spot at 4.376.

Pedregon gets a full pass this time and it's a good one to move him from outhouse to penthouse. He started with a terrific 0.905 sixty foot time and kept on pulling hard all the way down the track and into the new top spot.

Wilkerson was right behind him and runs into the top half of the field on a clean and straight pass.

Cruz Pedregon's incremental times: 60ft-0.905 sec., 330ft-2.362, 660ft-3.387/249.86 mph.
Tim Wilkerson's incremental times: 60ft-0.924 sec., 330ft-2.426, 660ft-3.463/246.57 mph.

Left Lane: Johnny Gray Runs 7.683/79.60, Now #6; Best prior run: 4.310/277.49, Was #5
Right Lane: Mike Neff Runs 4.251/287.23, Now #3; Best prior run: 4.349/278.06, Was #11

It's Neff from start to to finish and picks up one of the "little points" to move ahead of Hagan in the Championship and into the final number three spot for tonight.

Gray is within 0.001 at sixty feet, but can't get to the 330 lights with the tires stuck. He moves down the ladder one spot, but stays in the top half of the field.

Johnny Gray's incremental times: 60ft-0.911 sec., 330ft-2.648, 660ft-4.900/092.70 mph.
Mike Neff's incremental times: 60ft-0.910 sec., 330ft-2.370, 660ft-3.403/245.81 mph.

5:50 p.m. Cruz Pedregon is number one at 4.215 and Robert Hight is on the bump spot at 4.368.

Round 3 Qualifying

Funny Car Qualifying Notes, Session #3
By David Gerard

CHANDLER, Ariz. - Notes from round 3 qualifying in Funny Car at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 27th annual NHRA Arizona Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:

Left Lane: Ron Capps Runs 4.618/266.58, Now #13; No Prior Run
Right Lane: John Force Runs 4.890/234.90, Now #14; No Prior Run

12:49 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 85 degrees, relative humidity 18 percent, barometer 28.59 inches, adjusted altitude 3,380 feet, track temperature 122 degrees.

Tough tuning conditions yesterday finds these two at the bottom of the stack. Not their usual places!

Whoa! Lots of shake and spin for both cars. They pump and recover, but start to drop cylinders running to the finish line. Looked like a final round pedalfest!

With just 18 cars, they need for the others to do worse...

Left Lane: Jeff Diehl Runs 4.877/206.80, Now #14; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Johnny Gray Runs 4.240/285.83, Now #3; Best prior run: 4.310/277.49, Was #6

Gray is in and looking to improve and Diehl is just looking to get in.

Gray makes a clean and stright pass to the finish line and improves enough to move the Charger all the way to the new #3 spot.

Diehl gets in for now on a broken run. The Monte Carlo was loose at the 660 and still ran better than yesterday.

Johnny Gray's incremental times: 60ft-0.916 sec., 330ft-2.375, 660ft-3.397/248.80 mph.

Left Lane: Tony Pedregon Runs 4.593/218.27, Now #14; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Melanie Troxel Runs 4.402/275.90, Now #13; No Prior Run

We'll get a bump spot with these two.

Not much help on ET's, but both cars are in the field. They ran together to near the 660 lights and then Pedregon's Impala started to smoke the tires hard. He pumped it and recovered enough to improve on yesterday's time.

Troxel has a lot of smoke from underneath the car in the lights and runs close to yesterday best to get in the field. No oil on the track.

Melanie Troxel's incremental times: 60ft-0.911 sec., 330ft-2.418, 660ft-3.516/233.28 mph.

Left Lane: Jeff Arend Runs 4.411/274.55, Now #14; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Paul Lee Runs 4.481/234.82, Now #10; Best prior run: 4.335/287.17, Was #10

Jeff Diehl is on the bump spot at 4.877.

No joy for Lee with dropped cylinders early. He will stay #10.

Arend has engine problems after the 660 lights and slows from his best run yesterday. He still gets in the show in the number 14 spots.

Left Lane: Robert Hight Runs 4.356/277.72, Now #12; Best prior run: 4.368/278.46, Was #12
Right Lane: Bob Tasca III Runs 7.794/79.37, Now #9; Best prior run: 4.322/282.72, Was #9

Ron Capps is on the bump spot at 4.618.

Hight is away first and gets to the finish line with some of the candles still lit. He picks up just a tad of ET to stay #12.

Tasca had a strong leave, but was up in smoke before the 330 lights.

Robert Hight's incremental times: 60ft-0.910 sec., 330ft-2.425, 660ft-3.493/241.58 mph.

Left Lane: Todd Lesenko Runs 7.414/83.50, Now #11; Best prior run: 4.342/282.48, Was #11
Right Lane: Alexis DeJoria Runs 4.611/197.57, Now #8; Best prior run: 4.320/274.27, Was #8

No joy for these two.

Lesenko has the Charger start to hop around near the 330 lights and pumps the throttle before slowing.

DeJoria is done before the 660 light and won't improve this round.

Left Lane: Tim Wilkerson Runs 4.369/254.62, Now #7; Best prior run: 4.315/283.91, Was #7
Right Lane: Matt Hagan Runs 4.825/174.75, Now #6; Best prior run: 4.294/264.55, Was #6

Wilkerson gets near a full pass with dropped cylinders in the lights. He does improve, but its still the third best pass of the session, so far.

Hagan's Charger was away first and was matching Wilkerson's numbers until right at the 660 light and smoked the tires.

Tim Wilkerson's incremental times: 60ft-0.922 sec., 330ft-2.403, 660ft-3.458/238.85 mph.
Matt Hagan's incremental times: 60ft-0.924 sec., 330ft-2.430, 660ft-3.572/200.95 mph.

Left Lane: Mike Neff Runs 4.855/169.13, Now #4; Best prior run: 4.251/287.23, Was #4
Right Lane: Jack Beckman Runs 4.788/175.64, Now #5; Best prior run: 4.279/284.45, Was #5

Beckman was away first, but Neff's Mustang was more aggressive down low, they arrived at the 330 lights together and then both cars started to smoke the tires. Neither car will improve.

Left Lane: Jim Head Runs 8.195/71.98, Now #2; Best prior run: 4.238/289.07, Was #2
Right Lane: Cruz Pedregon Runs 8.014/77.55, Now #1; Best prior run: 4.215/296.37, Was #1

Last pair of the session.

Dueling tire smokers! They had identical 0.920 sixty foot times and then both kicked the tires hard before the 330 lights.

1:18 p.m. Ron Capps is on the bump spot at 4.618.

Funny Car Qualifying Notes, Final Session
By David Gerard

CHANDLER, Ariz. - Notes from final, round 4 qualifying in Funny Car at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 27th annual NHRA Arizona Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:

Left Lane: John Force Runs 4.352/278.00, Now #12; Best prior run: 4.890/234.90, Was #18
Right Lane: Jeff Diehl Runs 4.369/268.60, Now #14; Best prior run: 4.877/206.80, Was #17

3:19 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 91 degrees, relative humidity 15 percent, barometer 28.55 inches, adjusted altitude 3,819 feet, track temperature 128 degrees.

Ron Capps is on the bump spot at 4.618. Two cars are going home at the end of this session!

It wasn't a think of beauty, but the Force Mustang finally gets to the finish line under power and into the #12 position [sort of].Diehl runs about the same numbers and gets in on the #14 spot.

John Force's incremental times: 60ft-0.918 sec., 330ft-2.406, 660ft-3.475/236.88 mph.
Jeff Diehl's incremental times: 60ft-0.916 sec., 330ft-2.405, 660ft-3.472/236.55 mph.

Left Lane: Melanie Troxel Runs 4.364/273.94, Now #14; Best prior run: 4.402/275.90, Was #15
Right Lane: Ron Capps Runs 6.217/113.03, Now #18; Best prior run: 4.618/266.58, Was #18

Jeff Arend is on the bump spot at 4.411. Last chance for Capps in the NAPA Challenger.

Capps leaves with a 0.920 sixty foot time and runs with Troxel until after the 330 lights, where the slicks start to smoke hard. Sounded like he tried to pump it to no avail. That will end a terrific 105 race string of consecutive qualifying races.

Troxel makes a better pass ET wise, but slows a little in the traps. She will move up into the current #14 spot.

Melanie Troxel's incremental times: 60ft-0.918 sec., 330ft-2.419, 660ft-3.485/240.72 mph.

Right Lane: Tony Pedregon Runs 4.921/179.28, Now #17; Best prior run: 4.593/218.27, Was #17

Pedregon makes a single pass and has a good start. The car runs strong until near the 660 lights and then is up in smoke. Pedregon tries to catch it back up several times, and finally drops enough cylinder to stop the tire spin. He gets to the finish line, but can't bump in.

Left Lane: Bob Tasca III Runs 4.518/230.29, Now #9; Best prior run: 4.322/282.72, Was #9
Right Lane: Jeff Arend Runs 6.505/101.19, Now #16; Best prior run: 4.411/274.55, Was #16

Jeff Arend is on the bump spot at 4.411 and can't be pushed out. It's only up from here.

Up isn't in the cards, as the Solara falls to tire smoke before the 330 lights.

Tasca wasn't on a four thirty pace and has to lift, when the Mustang pulls steadily towards the wall at about the 660 mark.

Left Lane: Alexis DeJoria Runs 4.637/193.35, Now #8; Best prior run: 4.320/274.27, Was #8
Right Lane: Robert Hight Runs 6.941/96.90, Now #13; Best prior run: 4.356/277.72, Was #13

Nope! Hight has the best sixty foot time of the session by far, but kicks the tires at the 330 lights.

DeJoria's Solara is soft off the line and moving well down the track, but has the slicks up in smoke near the 660 lights and slows.

Left Lane: Matt Hagan Runs 4.329/282.19, Now #6; Best prior run: 4.294/264.55, Was #6

Todd Lesenko won't run this session, as he has ensured a spot on the ladder, currently in #11.Hagan will get a single.

He sticks the car on the track and makes a strong tune up pass for tomorrow's eliminations. Outside of a quick jog after the finish line, a straight and clean pass.

Matt Hagan's incremental times: 60ft-0.924 sec., 330ft-2.420, 660ft-3.474/245.18 mph.

Left Lane: Jack Beckman Runs 4.341/284.56, Now #5; Best prior run: 4.279/284.45, Was #5
Right Lane: Tim Wilkerson Runs 4.381/261.32, Now #7; Best prior run: 4.315/283.91, Was #7

A great looking side by side pass for the pair, but no improvements. They have identical soft 0.930 sixty foot times and Wilkerson gets a small advantage until the 660. It's Beckman on the top end to take the "win" by 0.0593 seconds.

Fun stuff!

Jack Beckman's incremental times: 60ft-0.930 sec., 330ft-2.433, 660ft-3.489/244.74 mph.
Tim Wilkerson's incremental times: 60ft-0.930 sec., 330ft-2.415, 660ft-3.488/236.67 mph.

Left Lane: Johnny Gray Runs 4.264/284.51, Now #3; Best prior run: 4.240/285.83, Was #3
Right Lane: Mike Neff Runs 4.298/288.70, Now #4; Best prior run: 4.251/287.23, Was #4

They leave within 0.017 of each other and Gray has all the incremental to make his best pass of the weekend and gets to the finish line first.

Neither car can improve, but two great passes for the conditions.
