Compression Test - Results
I'm buying a compression tester and need to ask "one of those questions"...
The tester comes with 14mm and 18mm adapters, will this work with my 340?
Thank you
Joe.

'72 340. My '72 service manual says anything over 100 lbs is good with no larger than 40 lbs variance.

Knowing that I have a lot of oil accumulating in the air cleaner (w/ new PCV valve) and the engine temp is way up, does anyone think it is worth doing a leak down test? I don't have a leak down tester and would need to buy or rent one.
Thank you
Joe.

that dead hole is probably why you're having issues with trying to get it running good

Thanks Blue
Just got done with the second test, this time with a cap full of oil in the cylinder. Jumped the compression test up to 50 lbs from 30 lbs.
Bummed out, I don't got this kind of money.........

Knowing there are so many variables it's hard to say, but what is a ball park figure for overhauling my 340 just using stock parts.
With the engine out of the truck what's a ball park, are we talking $100's, a $1000, more......
Thank you
Joe.

If you are in good with your machine shop like I am I get the block bored...honed...decked...new cam bearings and freeze plugs and line bored for 500 bucks...the rest is up to me...a gasket set and some good crank and rod bearings and piston rings...all for under 1000 bucks....balancing the rotating assy is another 250 for me...70 bucks for Pete to turn the crankshaft...I do it enough to be good with everyone
