Question Stall

I just got my headliner redone the other day and was driving it home when it died on me. At first I thought it was clogged fuel filter. Checked it and it was good, next I thought carb. was dirty so i cleaned it. By then the car was cooled down. It starts right up and drives for about 10 mins. then when I come to a stop it dies. I restart the car and its idiling fine in park and i rev it a little and engine sounds good. As soon as I put it in Drive it dies. Now im thinking torque converter is going. Any ideas on this would be great.

Nope! Whatever it is, it doesn't sound like the converter.

sounds like your carb. is out of adjustment, or your timing is off

Where you live may make a big difference. This time of year, what you are describing may be vapor lock. (if it is currently hot there) If this is something new, and it is hot there, you may have a vapor lock problem. Try driving it at night time when it it cooler outside (70's or lower) and see if it still does the same thing.

Easy test for the converter. With the car in gear and running, powerbrake it. See if the engine will run up to about 1200rpm's or better with your foot on the brake. If it does, odds are good the converter is slipping enough, and that would rule out that as the problem. Be careful, some shops will accept your diagnosis and do whatever repairs you request, even if that is not the problem.

Wow, if they checked it that fast, with that diagnosis, they should have it fixed by dinner time.

Good luck, keep us posted.

got the car back today. runs good. got a 18 month warranty so thats good. I thing though, sometimes when I go to start the car it doesnt do anything, gotta move the key a few times. I think it might be some kind of transmission safety switch. I take it back to them in 10 days so ill tell them bout that. cars looking good now new headliner and seatcovers.
