Transmission change help
I have a 74 dodge dart. Right now it has a 1969 318 bolted up to a 3 speed manual. I want to change it to a 4 speed since it needs a new clutch assembly anyhow and I will have to remove the 3 speed while I'm there. If I find a 4 speed will it change right out and everything bolt right back up or would I need to change something else? This is my first mopar car and it's a learning process for me.

I'm not a hundred percent on this but I think the A body 4 speed and 3 speeds are the same length but you will need the hump for the floor if yours was a column shift. One thing to look out for is the 4 speed you get after 75 they were 3 speeds with overdrive, so look for an 833 with an overall length of 30.5 inches from an A body. Make sure the pilot O.D. on the front of the trans is the same size as your bellhousing (the early 6 cyl. cars had a smaller pilot and 75 and latter had larger).
I would look for a 67 to 74 trans , good luck.

Do you know what year Dakotas would bolt right up? Or does anyone know of a list of transmissions that will bolt up in place of the A230 3 speed? No junkyards around me have any cars from 67-74 and new/rebuilt A833's are expensive so I was thinking maybe one of the newer cars or trucks would work too. I have a new clutch and flywheel for the 318 but the 3 speed bell housing is too small (Was a 6 cyl). A bigger bell housing cost as much as I could buy a used transmission with a bell housing for.
