Will a 4 speed out of a 71 1 ton work in my 68 Coronet?

Hey guys I found a 4 speed transmission, it comes with the bellhousing, clutch, pressure plate and starter for $150.00. Only thing is it came out of a 1971 1 ton pickup. What would it take to make it work in my coronet? Also anyone know if it would have a granny gear? If so how much is that gonna effect the top speed of it? Was planning on doing a pistol grip console set up if it matters. May skip out on the console if it is going to get in the way too much. Seems like a pretty killer deal to me and I don't want to pass it up if I can use it.

Yes, it would have a granny (compound low) gear, as it's a truck 4 speed.
This would not be a performance transmission. I don't know how the clutch, bell housing and accessories differ from a car or if they do but, it does sound like a good deal!

79, truck 4 spds are totaly different from car 4 spds. the bell, flywheel setup is different also, the bell bolt pattern is different from a car trans. yes, itll have granny gear, and will definitly affect your top end speed. its also a top load trans for the truck meaning you shift gears from the top of the trans. on a car trans you shift from the drivers side of the trans. again totaly diffrent setup. so pass it up.

Well That blows! lol too bad, I thought I had found a really good deal. But Would it be worth buying to use the clutch and bell housing and pressure plate and flywheel? Or is all of that different as well?

It might just be possible that transmission would be an aggravation every time you move the car. Might just drag the ground!!!

yeah the truck trans (NP 435 {eg}) is a top loader trans that works just great in a truck. It is like a 3 spd with just the extra granny gear added, 1st to 2nd shifts are sometimes not even synchronized (not 100% sure on that). Has a different bolt pattern where it bolts to the bellhousing. Although I believe the input shaft is the same 1" x 23 spline size. It uses an 11 inch clutch disc. great for towing or even a 4x4. the problem for using it n a car application is the slow shifting and the size of the trans. and the top load desige (with the shifter sticking right out of the top of the trans). It's still a good deal. buy it and sell it to someone else. You will definitely get your money back.

great truck transmission. Not so much for a car. if the price is right you may be able to turn a profit on it bye selling it to a guy into 4wheel drives and Jeeps.

Lol, theo, I saw that ounce, at the 92 nats in columbus. A guy put a 71 chally on a dodge 4x4 chassis. it was panther pink, had an enormous lift kit on it and like 35 tires. real mudder looking chassis. Um, I wasnt real impressed w/ it.saw pics of a 69 charger r/t, a guy did the same thing w/ that. In fact the pics were posted in this forum like a year or so ago. Didnt like it ither.picturing it in your mind, just doesnt come out the same way on a finished product.
