71 duster need second opinion.

Ok well yesterday I was having excessive car problems it was a really long day
(this part is an explanation with some venting)

anyway I had to have car towed home. I was having problems starting it up and we got it off truck and i tried starting it for ***** in giggles. Car started right up. When I went to put it in drive to park it my car would not shift being in the pissed off mood I was in i put it in neutral and turned off the car had girlfriend steer it while I pushed forced it in park, Set the parking break and tried to start it again. This time there was nothing car wouldn't even try to turn over. I was already running late for work so i had to leave.

(This part is the second opinion wanted)

So I went out to look at the car this morning and my engine was cockeyed.
So it looks like a motor mount broke. But upon closer inspection it looks like a rubber padding gave out.
So what do i replace exactly kinda new to the mopar slant six whole deal.
Anyway my second opinion thing is
Motor mount breaks screws up linkage to transmission
therefore transmissions is not all the way and park and car wont start
am i correct here?

Car
1971 duster
3.7 liter aka 225 slant six

I would replace the motor mounts and tranny mount. Then readjust the shifter linkage. If you are still having issues, go under the car, with the tires blocked, remove the shifter linkage and move the shifter lever on the tranny into park and try it then.

Yeah they're like rubber biscuits [the mounts]. {sounds funny I know} with studs.
They come apart all the time when they get old.

Welcome to te forum.

Not to tease you but, isn't it a "slant" 6????

After fixing your motor and or tranny mounts and if it still doesn't start, check you neutral safety switch.

Keep us informed and that is a cool Duster!!!

Well that motor mount might have been a problem for awhile before i even got the car.
Now my temp gauge works
my dash lights work it idols much better (had to retune carb cause it was idoling different)
And it especially seems like my car has more power.

Way to go.

you shouldn't have to adjust the valves.

slants did have adjustable valves but usually they dont require adjustment. All slant sixes up to a certain year {1980??} had a solid lift camshaft. You can check the adjustment but it may not be worth the trouble or time because they're probably not that far out of adjustment. If it was running rough, then maybe.

i think if the /6 was a daily driver, once a year the valves should be checked
so if you do then once, you wont have to do them again for a while

Yeah 90k miles and don't think it was well taken care of by first owner.
Second owner (who i bought it from) did some minor stuff but when i got it car had original cap and rotor it looked like (chrysler logo on cap)
so ima go ahead and do the adjustment seems like it probably needs it. I don't think the car is used to the good treatment.

thanks everyone
