Play in steering wheel with new gearbox?
So, I just replaced the tie-rod ends and steering gear on my '68 Fury. The Pitman arm had been replaced by the previous owner. The steering coupling is nice and tight. But, I STILL have play in the steering wheel. That is, when I turn the wheel, it moves a few degrees before engaging. I strongly suspect that I changed the steering gear for nothing, since this was the problem I was trying to solve.
What is going on?? Is there something inside the steering column itself that could be loose/worn out? Or is this normal, and my expectations are just unrealistic?

There is a Cross Shaft Adjustment procedure but I would hold off if both gear boxes are doing the same thing I'd be looking at all steering and suspension components.
Worn Ball Joints or Control Arm Bushings can produce loose steering feel.

Thank you ... I will check the ball joints and control arm bushings. Anything in particular I should be looking for?
Does it change anything if I point out that the wheel response is the same whether the car is stationary or moving?

I like to have a friend turn the wheel back and forth, not lock to lock, just like 1/8th each way.
I crawl under and focus one connection point at a time, 2-3 back and forths for each one. If any one shows movement make a note, then raise the car at the proper spots to check individual components.
