Trouble with my dipstick

something doesnt seem right. i went to check my oil level today with the car running and the oil was about 18 inches up the dipstick. i shut the car off and checked it again and it was at the normal level. Im assuming something may be plugged up somewhere and was wondering if anything can take care of this without a rebuild or pulling th emotor. it runs fine and my oil light hasnt come on at all

The title of the thread had me scared.... Checking the oil with the motor running will never give you an accurate reading, the oil is being tossed around like a teddy bear in a clothes dryer. You should be checking it on level ground with the engine warm, pull the stick, wipe it, put it back in,then take a reading.

with the engine running, you'll never get an exact reading

When I check the level with the engine on or off it is the same. It sounds like there may be something if it is reading that high, as it must go up into the tube.

if this dipstick condition lasts for more than four hours, you should consult your mechanic...

it probably has to do with how thick the oil is, the location of the dipstick, etc.
i wouldnt worry about it

ok. one of my friends had an 89 firebird with a 350 in it. his oil light turned on and he couldnt figure out why it lost pressure. he took it to a garage where they changed the oil, filter, and checked a few things. well the retard in the garage drained the tranny oil and put 5 more quarts in the engine. now i have a firebird i got for a mercury sable i had and another car to dinker with. and the garage is paying for a rebuilt engine and tranny that i dont plan on putting in anyways.
