how much oil in a a518 or 46rh
Hey guys
I have an A518 / 46rh and i have an aftermarket dip stick so i am not sure if the full line is actually full. Can anyone tell me when i drop the oil to change the filter how much oil goes back in.

Yes i have a guy here on the other side of Australia who has rebuilt some of these A518s. So he is helping me try to sort out why it wont change out of second into 3rd when at WOT. I pulled of the pan and took photos and video of pressure adjuster and sevo adjustment to check the basics. Here is the info and video i sent.
Tonight i spent a fair bit of time changing the geometory of the kickdown cable so at full throttle it does not pull as much but at half throttle it was close to the same. When i test drove it i got exited as it changed from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd at the same rpm. I then gave it from 0 km to WOT and it changed great. i thought it was job done. But then on every run after that it held in 2nd until my rev limiter comes in at 6000rpm. Bugger. I tried adjusting the cable but it didn't get any better. I was wondering if it got hot and played up as it was fine on the 1st WOT and normal driving conditions for 10 to 15 min. My extractors run down each side of the box. Having said that the oil did not smell burnt at all. I do have a small trans cooler lying around that i will fit if you think it may help as it is just going into the factory radiator set up.
Your right, I do have an after-market dip stick as the case did not come with one. So i am not 100% sure what the full level is.

I would think it takes more than 4 qts It depends on what pan it has ? Just a guestamate The fluid should be about 1/2" below the case hole for the dipstick with the engine off. Get the correct dipstick or use yours in another vehicle and mark the level

The pressure adjustment should NOT need adjustment unless some one has messed with it or a shift kit has been installed Your servo adjustment should have something like a 1/4" gap -- Check the service manual
Also IT IS important that the Kick down has the correct arc on the range IS it carb or FI ?

The ark of the kickdown cable is what i was playing around with to get an more even change. I have adjusted the line pressure to what was recommended by the trans builder. It needed to be doubled. I had about 4mm gap in between the plate and outer mount. It now has 8mm. I measured the amount of fluid that came out and it was 6-5 litters. I did run that same dipstick in a 727 before this box so i think it must be ok. I can measure the pan depth if this helps. These boxes were never released in Australia so i don’t know where to get one here.

It sounds like you have a carb SO they make a linkage adapter for the carb like this

5 to 6 litres is fine. It depends on how long the pan is off and how quick you move. Add 4 and check level in Nuetral. Add more if needed.
I think TV LYNN is spot on when he says "arc of motion". It may be time to measure at both ends to see what total travel is from the closed to open. And also investigate tension at closed throttle. There should be none. If there is tension you are to tight. Someone else should be under the car and when you set zero tension at the carb the arm should be closed underneath.
Also 1/8 inch adjustment is ALOT!! it is very sensitive to movement. So a bad swing or a poor sheath to the cable will have you chasing your tail.
Did you add a rev limiter or do you mean she is jumping out of gear at WOT near the shift point and bucking?

Yes i have installed a 6000rpm rev limiter.
That’s the site where I brought my conversion items from. I have that lokar cable. But I need to look into this adapter I think. The one in the link that TVLynn posted says it is for an edelbrock carby but mine is a holley. I will have to contact them and ask it will fit mine or only edelbrock linkages.
I think my trans must have a deep pan as it seems to hold a lot of oil. Here is a pic of a pan off my A518
Tonight I put it all back together with the new adjustments and a transmission cooler. Unfortunately it is no different. Still holding in 2nd at WOT and not changing. I backed the cable off until there was no pressure at all on the cable. It then changed nicely at WOT out of 2nd but now at normal street driving it changes from 1st to 2nd way too early. Its doing my head in. The local performance transmission shop here said I need to get the factory EFI intake manifold and use those linkages or copy them to get the arc correct. Unfortunately I would have to ship one from the US as they don’t have them here so I will look into the linkage 1st.
Can anyone who has one of these boxes please tell me the total TV cable travel from closed to WOT. Mine is 25mm

I am doing another stroker soon and you can have the intake for shipping if you want. My cores will come with it. But there are no pickup points for the TV on the intake? They are on the throttle body.
Also, the 1/2 shift is very early in the RH and RE. Remember those motors were done buy 4200-4400 rpm. And fuel economy was an issue. It is not uncommon to have the 1/2 upshift occur under throttle before you hit the flash rpm of the TC. This occurs on TC with 2400 rpm + stall. It will feel loose like a slip but it isn't. Its rolling thru the gear. You will also feel it jump back into 1st just before you totally stop on a slow roll.
Mine is built very heavy with a shift kit and all HD internals. I didn't limit the travel on the pinion and ripped the shaft and spit the pumpkin on the rear on a 1/2 shift with sticky tires. It shifts hard. Rookie move but we all make mistakes. The kit and valve body wont cause shift issues IMO.

my shift kit came with a spring set that moved the shift points
i set mine at 2000 under light throttle
my kick down linkage is a throttle cable i attached with a spring to take up the slack when at full throttle the spring will stretch and allow throttle movement.

I just measured mine and it is exactly the same as mine. If this is correct i am guessing that i need to look else where, maybe the trans has a problem and the tv is fine.

Well i have contacted Hughes engines, Holley, Mopar performance and several other suppliers and none of them list a TV rectifier part of any sort for a a518. They have them for other transmissions but not mine. My next step is to assume there is an internal problem with the trans.Tomorrow i am having some pressure tests done and will go from there. I would like the govenor checked too. From what i have read there should be next to no pressure at idle but it should increase about 1 PSI per mile.(aprox) I have read that there are several shift kits that can change the shift points. Can some one please recomend one if they have used one and been happy with it as i am just guessing at the moment.
