Bumper bolts and brackets

I took off the front bumper of my 68 Barracuda yesterday but ran into a couple of problems. A U shaped bracket connects the each corner of the bumper to the fender. The "nut" against the inside of the bracket, fender side is part square and part round. No wrench I had would move it. So I went to the bumper bolt. I got the nut almost to the end of the bolt when, as usual, the entire bolt began to turn inside the bumper. I used screw drivers, you name it, but after an hour, couldn't get it to hold still to take the nut off. I ended up taking a grinder to cut the U shaped bracket in half and remove the bumper. But, I still need to take the half of the bracket attached to the fender off, does anyone know how, and the brackets that connect the bumper to the framer off the bumper. My exerience is that the bumper bolts will all turn and make this no fun. Any suggestions? If worse comes to worse, I may cut the bolts out from the inside of the bumper and replace them all. It appears my bumper might need rechromed anyway. Oh yes, where can I get the U-shaped small brackets I cut in half? Thanks for the help.

i looked at my 1967 dodge and chrysler manual. the pics are not much help. but looks like the bolts and nut are regular with washers. course the bolts showing on the outside of the bumper are spacial. my manual is for the "B" and "C" body so the "U" bracket you are useing is different than my manual. sounds like time to fire the welder up.

I wish I had a welder and knew how to use it. Great idea and I appreciate it. I found the brackets at AMD for $25 not inlcuding nuts/bolts. I found the bumper carrier bolt package with them as well. I will try to get them off (I need to remove the frame brackets to de-rust them for painting) but I may end up cutting them out. Did that with my Charger.

i would cut bolts off before brackets. in my book it looks like all the bolts you are working with use a large flat washer with a lock washer, nut. any time you have a slot its best to use a flat. on all bolts on bottom of a truck i allways use anti-seize compound on all bolt threads. and dont forget the brake tubing fittings. hint no2, dont use cad plated bolts on exhaust parts. the plating will flake off and jam the threads.
