'73 Dart Swinger with a 440
Hey there. I'm about to pull the trigger on a 1973 Dart Swinger with a 440. It runs great and is in really REALLY good shape.
I know it has a 440 under the hood. Current owner says it has the tranny from the 318 that was in it originally. Non sure grip 8.25 rear end. Im guessing im gonna need to put in a 727 TF and an 8.75 in it. But I read that a 904(which shouldve been with the 318 wont bolt up to a 440. any help identifying what is what would be great. I am 100% sure the rear is an 8.25. The motor looks like a 440. Being sure about everything would be a good thing thanks!

Take a picture of the motor for us. There is no way a 904 can bolt up to a 440 neither a small block 727. A 440 is going to have the distributor in the front. You sure it's not a 340 small block?

Brem, pretty much as usual, is right on the money. Easy to tell a 727, in your case it HAS to be.
But on a small block, or even a few slants, just look under the car from the passenger side. You can see the bulge on the side of the 727 vs the straight sided pan of the 904.
Lordie, the previous owner must have been ignorant. Hope you got it at a good price.

$3000-$4000....haven't nailed the price yet. He's a good bud of my father in law. He knows his stuff but his memory is terrible. The car runs and the drivetrain has very little mileage on it. Built it, drove it for a few years here and there, then garaged it and maintained it the last 10 years. Really it just needs cleaned up and driven. Not much dry rotting of anything whatsoever!
