1972 satellite new to mopar

Hi
New to the forum but just picked up a 1972 satellite v8 318 auto. I have messed with cars some in the past but never a Mopar. Just wanted to ask a few questions to get me started. The manifolds are cracked bad so thinking headers, but it looks tite real tite.Is there best kind of header to run? Will I need to lift the eng. to get around the steering?I have never had an easy time with headers(sure sound nice) just don't want to open up a huge can of worms with the header install.
thanks for your help

one other thing is there a head that is a good bolt on? I know ford has the 5.0p head and chevy has the vortex head for there small blocks is there a factory bolt on for mopars small block?

I know nothing about the small blocks. But as far a headers go for Mopars......Hookers usually fit poorly, Heddmans..middle of the road in quality and price, TTI.. gold standard, but very pricey.

Luke -

Back in the 70's I used Hooker's in my 318 in my 74 Charger. The body style is almost identical to yours and the fit wasn't that bad, IIRC. Just be careful about the size primary tubes you get. Again IIRC, think I had 1 5/8" on a mildly worked motor.

The 440 and Hookers in a B-body is a very different story, but the proper used of a shoe horn (sledge hammer) can work wonders.

hey thanks for all the input and your time
I think Iam going to hold off on the heads and just do a build, looking around 340 and 360 seem to be the hot build not 318. guess there is no replacement for displacement in that case a stroker would be sweet.
excited, need to now just get the exhaust and pro-stars wheels on her, then I can take her out.
thanks again

Sounds great and good for you! My car is a restoration that wont see the road for years unless I have a rich uncle die. BTW, I am fresh out of rich uncles! Keep us up on what you do with it! Scotty. BTW, other members, I REALLY dont know small blocks, so do the exhaust bolts go into the water jackets like the BB's, or is he safe?

Hey luke, hows it going New member here and I also have a 72 Satellite..Cheers Ill drink to that,,,You may get 5-10 hp from those headers but at what headaches, The HP exhaust manifolds worked great for me.
But anyways, A ton of guys are going with a 340 build with the bigger 360 heads or so ive heard..Id still keep your org, block though if its #rs matching

thanks for the info ...after you said HP manifolds I did a little research.
found this write up on HP manifolds on a 360 from mopar muscle magazine...kinda got me thinking .....

http://www.moparmusclemagazine.com/t...ngine_exhaust/

Log 318 manifolds
For our baseline test, we fitted the 360 with the lowest of exhaust low, a set of stock small-passage 318 iron exhaust manifolds. Bolted to the manifolds was a set of 21/4-inch head pipe extensions 24 inches long. So equipped, the 360 put out a respectable 311 hp at 4,600 rpm and 403 lb-ft of torque

log 360 manifolds

We moved up a notch from the early 318 iron manifolds to late 360 iron log-style manifolds. The 360 manifolds are nothing to look at, but the internal passages and outlet are significantly larger than those of the 318 pieces. Power was up a little, moving to 314 hp and 407.1 lb-ft of torque.

340 high-performance manifolds
Our final test of factory iron was a set of rare and expensive early 340 high-performance manifolds. With the 340 exhaust, the 360 inched up to 315 hp and 409.1 lb-ft of torque, which represented very little gain on this engine.
