Did you check to make sure that your shifter arm is in the correct place when you adjusted/installed the shift cable? There's a pawl inside the tranny that closes the switch to allow the current to complete a ground when it's in the proper place. If it's not adjusted corectly, it may start in another gear. Good way to see if this is the problem... set your emergency brake and be very careful, then turn your key to the start position, and slowly pull your shifter through the gears. If your car starts anywhere except park or neutral, your cable is out of adjustment. If it still doesn't start, look for a disconnected wire on the tranny. It could have been knocked loose while you were installing the cable.
