Cabin smells Coronet 440

I have had a on going problem with a smell that seems to becoming from the engine compartment thru the air intake. I doesn't smell like exhaust
but like hot engine smell. Some times very strong. I don't see any fluid leaks. Any tips. Looking at the area between the intake manifold and valve cover, next to the carb there is an opening into the block on both sides.
Does any one know what they are for?

I think you should be looking at the firewall - missing seals/gromets missing hood seal,
