Sounds have a funny way of traveling through the frame to make it sound like they are coming from a different area of the vehicle.

What is the motor?

If it is coming from the motor, i would start by checking the timing

It could be coming from anywhere..

Rod knock.
Bent pushrod
Something messed up with rockers
you may have a type of head gasket that is supposed to tick..
Mufflers
Exhaust
carb
Valves
Lifters
Timing
ECT

It can be many things.

you need to provide more info though..

My guess is the carb.
