Hey guys. Well I got the phone call we all dream about. A little old lady had a car in her garage and needed to get rid of it.

Yes... just come by and take it. All i knew is that it was a 1969 Dodge and I might not want it because it had 4 flat tires.

She is a 1969 Dodge Coronet 500 with 89K original miles. She comes with air conditioning, center console, a 318, and 4 spare tires. She was driven into the garage in 1991 and hasn't been out since. She has been re-painted (18 + years ago) but she shined up real well. The pictures tell the rest of the story.

Any advice on how to get up and running again is appreciated. I am in no rush to get her on the road, but am looking forward to the thaw in NJ and some spring driving.

excellent car man, i love the tail panels on the 500`s and r/t`s. Congrats. I would change the oil before start up and then pull the dist. and oil pump drive gear, and reprime the oil pump too. put like 3 gall. of gas in the tank and let it set over night outside, make sure that there arent any pinholes in the tank. the water seperates from the gas over time and sits on the botom of the tank then rots holes in the tank due to exposure. i brought a car home simmiler to yours and I put fresh gas in it the next day I had a garage full of gas fumes, and a very wet tank.

 

Has that bag of trash been hanging there since 1991?

look for a build sheet under the rear seat and maybe under the carpet on both front sides it also could possibly be under the two front seats or under the dash by the glove box if you have one of these that car could be golden with that low of mileage on the auction block

 

Thanks guys. I am actually located in Northern NJ. I wound up flat bedding it back home and yes the gargage has been there since 1991 along with a bunch of cool little stuff in the trunk.

I started by pulling the plugs and spraying wd 40 in each cylinder. I plan on addressing the fluids this week (gas, oil, anti-freeze).

How do I pre-lube the oil pump?

 

after you put fresh oil in the motor, pull the distributor, and then the drive gar under the dist. thats down in the block. bring the motor up to t.d.c. top dead center.then mark the dist housing and the block. then pull it. then using a magnet and straight swrewdriver place the magnet on the side of the gear, then put the driver tip in the slot on top of the gear. twist it to the right pull it out. then using a pump priming rod stick it into the hole and down into the pump. then using a drill run it till you feel pressure, then run it for a few minutes. if you hear bubbles, your going the wrong way. if the drill wants to pull out of your hands your doing it right. pull out the prime rod.and reinsert the gear drive. basically the same way you took it out. make sure that the slot in the top of the gear is running longways toward the front of the motor. then reistall the dist. make sure that not only the marks match you did to the housing and block match but alo that the rotor is pointing the same way as well. thast it. takes like 10 min. total.

I tried to remove the back seat last night and couldn't do it. I saw a release hinge under the seat but couldn't get it to budge. Any suggestions on how to do this properly would help. Also when I drop the gas tank is there anything I should I know?

if i remeber right the back seat just sits in there it pulls out and the back of the back seat is on some kind of metal bracket that you lift it off the gas tank also might be the location of the build sheet they will sometime put them on top of the tanks its a weird locations but i have seen them there

 

you should be able to push down and back on the bottom seat and for the back there should be two bolts holding it in place just take them off and raise the back up and the tank should have a new rubber gasket put in the tank for the filler neck and should be able to take the two straps off and drop it but i would surly take it to a good rad; shop and have them clean it and seal it for you and the build sheet should be in one of the seat springs front or rear it depends on how many they had to drink that day hahahaha

I pulled the tank and what I thought was the build sheet on top of the tank was actually the tank itself. It seems worn out and brittle.

Can I get a replacement tank for the car, and do I need a new fuel sending unit? Where do you guys reccomend I go for these parts?

 

Well it wont be a sending unit, it will be a float system for the gage, you have a mechanical pump on the block I would think, Tanks are easy to get, if you do a little digging on the internet I am sure you can find a supplier close to you. Hope this helps.

As far as the broadcast sheet #'s go, you want them all decoded ? And the rear end should have a bill of materials # on the other side (towards the front of the car) on the axle tubes. Nice work finding the broadcast sheet.

i try to do as much work on the car as possible before the family wakes up so I had my french toast with some left over gas from the old tank. Don't all you guys eat it like that?....It's a piece of foam that the previous owner had wedged between the jack stand and the trunk floor. Got the new gas tank in today. Waiting for a new sending unit, and the radiator should be back from the shop Monday...I'll look for those #s on the rear end tonight... Thank for all the help
