Valve Lapping????
Valve Lapping????
Anyone have an opinion on valve lapping? I've heard some people say it is an outdated process and a waste of time. I'm cleaning up some eddie heads that are about 10 years old, but the valves look to be in good condition. I cleaned them up with brake clean and some steal wool. They look pretty good, but i would happily do the labor involved with lapping if it will benefit- though if it is a waste of time I won't bother.
If you don't want to pay to do the full valve job again, it's cheap insurance to make sure that the valves are seating all the way around, just don't take too much off them. Heck, if you have them off, they look good, and you have the time, lap em.
i always hand build my heads, i worked in a shop for 30 yrs and stone grinded plenty of values, but if you want a perfect fit you hand lap them in, i use a electric drill with a piece of 5/16 hose to couple the drill bit to the drill stem and a screw driver end to hold presure on the value seat, push the value on and off its seat as you lap,go in both forward and reverse, when power lap them in. ck the padern a few times until you have a solid perfect seat, takes many hours.its worst it if you want a car that runs perfect.
On a large valve, it would be turned with a drill. On a small valve, by hand.
