Exclamation Cant Get Valve retainers/clips When I Compress the Valve Spring

I just got my 302 casting heads and i cant seem to get the springs off, I compress the spring and the valve just goes down with it. I tried putting carb cleaner on it and tapping the valves with a rubber mallet and nothing seems to work. Am i doing something wrong? Also can i silica sandblast all the parts (valves rockers springs and head itself) without damaging them? or how should i clean them? Thanks

You could media blast them with something like walnut shells. DO NOT sand blast them...
Are you holding the valve closed ?

You need a valve spring compressor tool that holds the valve closed while you compress the springs. You can buy one at Sears or any online tool dealer or parts supplier.

You need the large "U" shape valve spring compressor the holds the valve closed. Like before mentioned I bought one at Sears.

This is a common problem. The locks are wedged in the retainers is all. Pack some rags under the valves and lay the head on a wood bench. Take a piece of tube or socket and extension which will fit on the retainer and give them a sharp but not heavy blow with a hammer.

If the heads are rusted from exposure, you might first try leaving for a few days, and apply a little penetrating oil every day.

You need to block the valve to keep it from moving. a regular c style valve spring compressor will solve your problem.
I recommend you find a shop that knows how to really clean parts. It's worth the money. No blasting.
