How do you remove the shifter cable from a 904 tranny?
Newbie to the Mopar world here! I bought a 1965 Fury 2 recently for my daughter's first ride. It has the 318 poly wide block with a 904 column shift tranny. I knew when I bought the car that the engine would soon need an overhaul or need to be replaced. I've also noticed that the tranny has begun to slip. Fortunately, I found a good deal on a 1963 poly engine and tranny combo on ebay! I've started the removal of the old engine/tranny which leads me to my first question. How do you remove the shifter cable from the tranny? I got as far as removing the little bolt from the adjusting wheel. The cable can be easily pulled out about 2" before stopping. I don't want to damage the cable by just yanking it out without some feedback from others who may know the correct procedure? Question #2. After reading through numberous posts on this forum, I've now begun to wonder if a 1963 pushbutton tranny will work in a 1965 column-shift Fury? Thanks for any comments and info!

turn the adjuster wheel out a few turns, and pull the cable out lightly allowing yourself about 2 inches of room. take a long. small screwdriver and push it in to the upper right side of the cable. when you feel the screwdriver tip touching something, twist your screwdriver clockwise while pulling on the cable. there is just a small wound spring in there, holding the pintle in the cone.

Thanks, bud! I'll be sure to give that a go when I get back home. I'm an OTR truck driver and just got into Santa Maria to pick up a load of strawberries and should be back home to try out your suggestion by Friday!
