Starting to get my baby running

Hello guys.

So, I got my 68 Newport running. Not running great, but running never the less.

So, the engine idles and purrs pretty decently. It's been sitting for a year, and the fuel is pretty old. But, I'll siphon it out and put new fuel in there. Tires are pretty dry rotted. So, I figured I'd use that excuse to get new rims and tires.

Next up is more fuel. I know it came with the 2bbl. I read on here not to go with a 4 bbl, and I also read to go with the 4 bbl. I don't get it. Go with the Edelbrock 600-650 CFM or no???

Also, I plan on eventually getting an intake manifold, but now, I'm probably just going to get the carburetor. Will the Edelbrock 1406 fit right onto the stock manifold? I am going to get a spacer for now. But, will it fit or no?

Eventually, I'm going to get a better camshaft, and that manifold, as well as upgrade the ignition. I just bought it, and I don't want to go all out right away.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

on 383 / 440 engines it MIGHT happen that if it has an A / C the intake manifold is machined for the A / C bracket. and some manifolds might not be machined for it. so check it out. on going from a 2 bbl to a 4 bbl on small block and B the cable and rest of the linkage must be made for the 4 bbl. as the hook point on the 4 bbl is more towards the left and forward. the 413/ 440 only had 4 bbl so cable is allways the same

If it's an orig 2bbl intake? No, a 4bbl carb will not swap right on, you'd need a 4bbl intake.

I don't like edelbrock carbs, but if that's what you want, it is your money.

The reason you've read conflicting answers about swapping from a 2bbl to 4bbl carbs is because- it depends on the application.
Some guys are under the impression that throwing a 4bbl carb at their car=mucho more horses and that's just not the case.
Its a system, if your motors fuel demands increase (i.e. Cam, exhaust, intake, ignition, etc.) then a 4bbl carb swap is in order.

But, as Moe has eluded to, a 4bbl carb swap sounds simple in theory, but there are things to consider, such as; tuning the carb (mech or vac seconds), throttle linkage/kick down cable, choke set-up (elec, manual, heat), hood clearance, air cleaner (a 2bbl air cleaner will not drop on a 4bbl carb without changes), fuel line routing, etc.
All of these things need to be addressed.

It's the 383 with a.c.
I'm going to buy the carb, and not install it until I get the intake manifold and cam. The carb is 150, manifold Is about 250. So I think it will be money well spent..

I found a spacer that allows a 4 BBL carb to be put onto the stock intake. But, I know there is alos a bunch of other stuff that needs to be purchased. I figured I'd just enjoy the ride right now, and worry about performance modifications later.

I love the way it looks. The rediculously straight lines are so sexy to me...
