72 Challenger K-member

Hi all, was wondering if a 72 that came out of the factory with a 318 could take a 440 with out having to change the k-member? Some on told me that they thought the small block k's had to be changed? but an article on hemming's says 70-74 works for all small and big blocks. Does anyone have any info on this? Looking to buy this project. the guy selling it says a 383 came out of it but he could not remember if it was bolted in or not? lmao

Also it has a 8-3/4 in the rear with 3:23's think these will hold up to a 440- 493 stroker?

Thanks in advance,

Here is the vin code JH23G2B223687

Here is the quote from Hemings

Chassis and rear
Chrysler's E-body cars are unit-body based, with a front subframe comprised of two side rails and three cross members. The center crossmember in the subframe is called the K-member, because it's shaped like a K, and it supports the engine and the front suspension.

This is worthy of discussion because six-cylinders, small-blocks, big-blocks and the Hemi each used unique K members, though on 1970-1974 models, small-block cars and big-block cars shared a K-member.

No you won't have to change the K-member,get new motor mounts from Schumacher. With an automatic trans the rear might hold up but with sticky tires the stock axles might not.

Thumbs up

Ok, Thanks was worried. According to the specs for the 72 the 4 speed was not an option? or was it? I get 2 different stories on that as well. I have a hemi box ready to convert if it's worth it
only problem is short tail housing I think. Was planning on a b-bod for a project. Think it would work?

Schumacher Auto parts? Not sure we have one of those out here in cal lol.

Thanks again.

The '72 chally had the 4speed as an option with the 340,the 318 was auto only.

Here's Schumacher's web site:

Question

So a 4 speed should go right in? no tunnel work? what about the bell housing 10 or 11" most likely a longer drive shaft?

Thanks for the link they are sending me a catalog when they get them printed.

I can't help with the 4speed install, but I know you will need the right flywheel for the engine, clutch ***'y,clutch pedal and linkage, and now that 8 3/4 rear might not live behind a big block with a 4speed tranny, they came with the dana from the factory.

Maybe others will chime in with help, good luck! john

4 speed

K frame will work. You can get the motor mounts on ebay or swap meet. 8 3/4 with 323's will work fine. I had them in my 70 challenger with 440 slightly worked. You will need the frame mount for "z bar". They sell them new and needs to be welded to the frame. I am not 100% sure on the cross member but I think it should work. If your car is an auto car, you will need to buy the 4 speed hump. Easy to install if you know how to weld. If you don't find the motor mounts, I might have an extra set to sell you if you want. Let me know. Good luck.
