Carb searching

I'm looking to purchase a new carb. I'm not sure which carb will best fit my needs, I was hoping someone could help. Currently I have a 440 engine (not the original engine) with a 4 bbl Carter AFB w/ electric choke - the intake is date coded 12.12.68 casting #2806178

The motor is stock, the car is a weekend cruiser, so I'm looking for a carb with decent gas milage, but has plenty of power.

I've been looking at some 750 Holley carbs, which I like, but I just don't know.

fish -

The 750's are a safe bet with a stock motor, with the double pumpers getting you "off the line" a little quicker than a vac secondary. A basic 4150 model is fine, but you can look at the ProForm series if you like.

a 750 will work but the 440 will be over carbed. 600 would be better and get you off the line faster.

Well, I may have found a carb I'm interested in. 510-80555C Holley 650 cfm. Which costs a bit more than I'd like ($386), anyways, would it be better to rebuilt the existing Carter carb or just buy a new one? How much does it cost to rebuild a carb (parts & labor)?

My son and I just rebuilt our Carter AFB 9606 (605 cfm) the kit was $28 and took us about 3-4 hours. In comparison to a $350 new carb, I would say it would certainly be worth trying first.

I was not hard, I can't say we did everything right but we just followed the directions that came with it.

The best part about it was we learned a little bit about the carb and how it works. Shoot I would give it a try!

Joe.

well, technically, i have air-valve secondaries
but, nvm
my 440 never bogs, and it doesn't have too much of a cam in it. It has been floored coming off the line, and no black smoke or bogging ever occurs
