2wd to 4wd conversion?

Hello all,
New here with some ?'s. I have a 1994 Ram 1500 4x4 with a 5.9l. the transmission blew a while back so I'm trying to get it going again. issue is that the tranny is not rebuildable... well with the damage it would be to costly. I have a friend rebuilding it for me.

I was told by the dealer that it has the 46RH transmission in it. Due to time and money I cant aford a new one or a new rebuilt from a shop... So I've been looking at some junk yards and the issue with that is trying to find a 4wd tranny... I've found 2wd version's but I'm not sure if they are 46RE's or 46RH's.

1. Is their a way to visually inspect a tranny to tell if it's a 46RE or 46RH? Electrical plugs, case, etc.

2. If I can't find a 4wd RH tranny how hard is it to convert a 2wd to 4wd?... What would be needed to swap?

3. Dose anyone know the vin # and configuration I would need to look for for a 46RH tranny 2wd or 4wd?

4. Any other option's I could use.. 47RH,etc... Also is their a big difference between the 46RH from a 5.2L and an 5.9L engine?

Thanks for all the help.

As far as telling the two apart, i can't help you there but I do know that the 47RH was a diesel tranny and I don't think will bolt up to a 360.

There is no difference in a 46RH tranny that was behind a 5.2 and 5.9.

You can use some internal parts from a 2wd 46RH in a 4wd 46RH, you just can't once to get to the OD unit/tailshaft housing. I'm sure that you can convert a 2wd trans to a 4wd.

I hope this helps you some. If your buddy is rebuilding it for you, then he should be able to sit a 2wd and 4wd tranny next to eachother and tesll what needs to be swapped.

Thanks for the help. Very imformitive.

I called around to a couple local shops and they said it's alot more to it then just unbolting one and bolting the other OD unit on.. Oh well. Search is still on.

The internals have to get changed out (output shaft for one and then you need to take measurements and blah blah blah).

I'm sure that you will be able to find something. Even look on E-bay. Sometimes you can find a good deal on there. You just need to do a search for the same item with a couple different discriptions of the item.
