What Axle Do I have?

Just purchased a 1986 3/4 ton 4x4 4 speed ram. I am almost positive it has the dana 44 front... but not sure on the Rear? This truck is purely off road and im wanting to do some inexpensive work to make the axles more off road ready... Thinking spooling rear and like a traxlock in the front. I need to know what axles were under the rears of these things and How to determine which i have?
Thanks,
David Everhart

Heavy duty Dana 44 front/Dana 60 rear.

The front HD D44 is nothing more than a normal D44 with 8 lugs. the guts are all the same.

The rear is a D60 rear axle (very common). You can buy parts pretty cheap and upgrade those drum to disc for not a whole lot of money.

The trac-loc is an ok posi unit. When they are tight, they are good, but once they start to get loose, for get it, they act like an open diff.

Very helpful Thanks, I dont plan on doing much with it other than the occaisional off road and farm work around the house.. so I am hoping those less expensive traxlock with suffice for what i want to do.

They should be fine. Just before you install it, I'd rebuild it if the PO doesn't know how many miles are on it. If you buy new, I'd got a for a lock rite locker instead and go with a mini spool if you don't feel like resetting up the gears (although a full spool is better).
