1974 J10

Well I figured since I have a 1974 AMC (Jeep) J10 pick up, I should post something about it in here. I've had it since 2003 and have been working on it since. I used it as my daily driver for a few months back in 2004 when I had to pull my tranny out of my dakota and rebuild it. After that I started to build it up for wheeling. It has an AMC 360 built, TH400 built, it had a qt case that I pulled and installed a dana 300 with clocking ring (hopefully soon i'll be able to install 32 spline outputs), dana 60 full floating rear axle out of a 79 J20, a HD dana 44 front axle out of the same j20 which will be getting pulled out so a chevy dana 60 SRW front axle to go in. The front suspension is stock leafs with 1.5" add-a-leafs and BJ's offroad lift shackles, the rear is 1.5" add-a-leafs and 1.5" blocks. I have cut the extended fender flares offs and have a set of 35x15x16.5 TSL super swampers mounted a do-it-yourself beadlock kit. The interior got gutted and 12 gauge steel went down for new floor boards, seats from an 03 jeep rubicon went it, I hand made the instrument cluster and replaced the shifter lever with a B&M sport shifter.

78D200 06-25-2008 01:21 AM

Well I picked up a set of 4.56 richmond gears for $210 yesterday and a Detroit Locker for $300 this morning, all for the front D60. Only reason why I'm not going with 5.13 gears like I wanted to is because the friend of mine that is giving me the 14B for free has a carrier and a set of 4.56 gears for it. No point in spending the extra money now just to change it.

Hopefully next weekend I'll be able to get the axles set up and maybe start to fit everything under the frame.

I did notice that one of my front springs has a slight bend in it behind the axle. Once I get the rear susension all set, I'll place the front axle in and see how see sits before replacing the springs. At least that way there I'll be able to see if I need to lift the front end up higher or not.

Also I'm picked up a 5'x4' piece of 1/4" alum diamond plate sunday night so the bed started to come off lastnight, which will make it easier to setup the rear.

Well Heather helped me out today with appling a coat of primer to the frame after I cleaned it up. I was cleaned up the alxes, primed and painted them. I'll be able to get a lot more done once the ubolts, spring plates, diff covers, 4" front leaf springs, and shock mounts come in.

Nice Build. Keep the pics coming.

78D200 08-19-2008 06:14 PM

If you click on the link in my sig, you can see all of them. I'vs got a lot going on right now with heather and I loooking at houses but I'm going to try and get a lot done before we actually move.

78D200 08-24-2008 05:27 PM

Well Heather had plans today so I had to paint the frame myself. I also got the bed bolted down and the fuel cell half way bolted down.

Rusty's 4" front leaf springs

http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s...0/DSC02092.jpg

Hopefully sometime this weekend I will have the time to get them installed along with the front D60.

challenger 08-27-2008 05:02 PM

WOW Nice JOB there 78D200 looks like you have alot of time on her and boy its sure nice to see someone take time and build one of them up as nice as you are doing , sure would be neat to have a ride in it when your done :D but you would have to drive over here LOL hope you keep up the good work and remember to take your time and it will all be fun in the end with a great time in the dirt / snow ewwwww snow i sure dont want to see that yet but its coming hehehe anyway great job and keep up the great work and we will be waiting to see her when it is all done :)

78D200 08-31-2008 02:41 PM

Well Heather and I got the new front leafs in place. Heather has to work tomorrow so I'll probably end up burning out the bushing out of the chevy leafs and get them cleaned up. Hopefully this week I'll be able to get some bushings for them and get the rear suspension set up and ready to be welded in by next weekend. All that I'm waiting on now is the stuff I ordered from Ruff Stuff and I have to get a set or rebuild kit for the king pin joints on the front D60.

I was also able to get my driver's side door latch problem fixed.... at least for the time being.

You know i have to say it but ( you might be a red neck if you have a gate lock on your truck door ) hehehehe :D :D :D just kidden thats a good idea but what are you missing to make the latch work and good luck on the king pin joints <<<>>> keep up the good work :D

78D200 09-01-2008 03:43 AM

its the latch itself. one of the springs and levers is broken and nobody around me has a pre 78 door latch. from 79 and later are different (figures since I have 2 79s sitting at a friends house). Once the cab doors start to take a beating, I'll be removing them and making new ones and will probably use a gate latch on both sides.

...... And yeah I am a redneck. lol :D

78D200 09-01-2008 11:32 AM

Well this morning I was able to burn out the old bushing out of the chevy springs and get things clamped into about the position that they will be for the rear suspension. I've got to get my hand on some bushing and metal sleves for the springs and then I can really start to set it up. It's starting to look like its coming back together once again.

dietz_diggler 09-02-2008 04:42 AM

wow lots of work here too, great looking project, i used to have a tonka toy of one of these, it started as brown, then painted burgundy. one of the toys that lasted as the others came and went. Glad to see the same happening here. As for the door latch, my dad used one of those little slide bolt locks used on house and appt doors years ago, on the inside of his 63 dodge panel delivery. He drove it for years like that.

78D200 09-02-2008 07:15 AM

Thats a good idea. It would be less likely to get ripped off while I'm in the woods than the latch that I'm using. I'll keep that in mind though.

78D200 09-05-2008 06:47 PM

Tonight I got the new poly bushings installed and one hole drilling in the front two spring hangers for the rear springs. I had to drill the hole for the pop rivit for the crossmember that goes up and over right behind the cab. Once my stuff to bolt in the axles comes in next week, I'll be able to clamp the axles to the springs, set the vehicle on its own weight and start to weld in the rear hangers.

ITS STARTING TO COME BACK TOGEHTER!!! http://www.ifsja.org/forums/vb/image...iggthumpup.gif

78D200 09-13-2008 03:35 PM

This is all you guys are getting for tonight. I'll get some better pics up tomorrow night so you can laugh at my welding skills.

78D200 09-14-2008 01:00 PM

Well I got a little more done today. I was able to get all the hangers and shackle bolts torqued down and Heather helped out with getting some of the tires mounted on the beadlocks.

78D200 09-16-2008 02:34 PM

Well Heather and I got the wheel studs pounded into the hubs for the 14B and got the backing plates and the brakes on. Just have to get the right drums for it and then the tires will go on.
Heather has been a huge help.

oh i have. she actually posted this pic on her myspace profile. lol

78D200 09-17-2008 05:46 PM

Well, all I can say is thanks to Heather for kicking my @$$ into going to work on the j10 tonight. She sent me a text asking if I was planning on working on it today and I said that I wasn't sure. She said "oh.....". I asked if she wanted to and she said "np, its ok.....". I couldn't believe it, HEATHER WANTED TO WORK ON THE J10! I was thrilled and told her that I'd swing by the house to pick her up and we'd work on it. Well Thanks to her, we were able to get the whole rear alxe finished up and got the last two tire mounted. I'm still waiting on my stuff from Ruffstuff though. I think I'm going to give them a call tomorrow.

78D200 09-20-2008 02:17 PM

Well Heather and I got the rear pretty much done, minus installing a vent hose, 3/8 diff cover and trying to get the pinion set up a little better. Still waiting on the hardware for the front axle. I'm going to give Dan at Ruffstuff a call and see whats up with it.

The 38.5s look small, but they will do till I can afford to upgrade the axle shafts and up the tire size to 42s.

78D200 10-01-2008 05:38 PM

Heather and I got the front D60 in tonight..... then it started raining.

I'll try to get some pics this weekend since I've been working 12-14 hours a day during the week.

78D200 10-05-2008 12:57 PM

Well the axle is in, the tranny cooler is mounted, the rear crossmember is ready to be welded in, and the diff covers are ready to be bolted on.
