Dead, they are a big thing here, and according to owners who actually take them off road, they work better than a CJ. Look at the XJ forum.

I've owned 3, bought 1 new in '94, and it now has over 250K miles on it. Another I sold to get rid of a woman, and the '99 I have now. I love these vehicles and will probably keep the one I have till I die. They feel so easy and natural to drive and the one's I've had just keep on ticking along.

http://www.naxja.org/ There's ya an XJ (Cherokee) forum

That being said, all of mine have had the 4.0 6cyl, I'm not sure about the other engines, and I did have one Commanche (sorta Ute version of the Cherokee) that had the GM 2.8 engine in it. I absolutely HATED the seats, and the engine felt underpowered compared to the 4.0

AW4 transmissions are one of the best autos out there. NP231 t-case are all over the place but there are different inputs dependin on the years. The axles are D30 (F) and D35 (R). Both are good for stock jeeps and can be built up some.

is the aw4 a moden 727 ???? or can we use good after market parts in them .
ok the low down from what i gather over here is . they are very powerfull on & off road but really guzzle fuel .
they are very cheap to buy ( cherokee ) because they cost to much to fix . ( over here )
there great off road but once again everybody is scared of how much parts cost $$$$$$$$ .
& a few people say they got a hemi 6 . ( i have seen there a 242 cid ) is there any parts interchangeable with our 245/265 hemi 6's ????
& what are the engines called .
at the end off the day i'm not to affraid of buying parts from over there as i already have to buy all my engine , trans & diff parts from over there anyway .
but the main rivel will be a suzuki sierra 4x4 . cheap on fuel , light , windsceen folds down for blasting ferals infront of us , & the passenger can stand up & spotlight or shoot while still able to talk to the driver , & parts are cheap & in stock on the shelves over here .
although i would much rather a mopar .
talk me into it lol . cya all .

The AW4 is different from the 727. They are only related because they are both in Mopars.

Jeep never had a "hemi 6". The earlier versions of the inline 6 cylinders were 4.2L/258ci and carb, although you can not get multiport fuel injection system for them and there are plenty of TBI systems out there that will bolt up.

The later versions of the inline 6 cylinders are 4.0L/242ci and are fuel injected. There is plenty of aftermarket support for these motors.

One thing a lot of people do it stroke the 4.0L by using the 4.2L's crank and rods. It pushing the 4.0L to ~4.3L. Add a cam and tune the computer and you'll have a beast of a motor. Other people have installed turbos or superchargers on them as well.

Some that have the tow package also have the very desirable D44 rear axle.

Parts are cheap and plentyful for them, the thing that is going to kill the deal is shipping.

The suzuki sierra 4x4 that you have over there is the exact same as the suzuki samirai over here. Great little rigs that need quiet a bit of work to get any power out of them. Just about everything needs to be swapped out of them to make them not break.

Heck, I think I saw one about two years ago poop out a rear axle shaft before we even got to the trail head.

Dead, figure about 17 mpg out of them. I dunno if you got it or not, but I have the Cherokee, a Comanche PU, and another Cherokee for parts... if you got it, and need some stuff that can be reasonably shipped, gimme a yell mate. That 4.0 six is an old American Motors design from what I've heard, and they aren't too hard to work on, are generally good for about 250K miles before you have to start thinking about an overhaul. Most common thing I can think of to go wrong on them is the crank position sensor (tough to change). I'm really biased in favor of them, but I've had a lot of good luck with them, and they are one of those vehicles that as soon as you sit in it, it just feels right, the ergonomics of almost any of them is great.
