CA Labor law help

Anyone familiar with CA labor laws?

I was told today that as of monday i would not be working (laid off, right?) due to my employer tightening the belt. I was one week away from finishing a 3 month probationary period and now they are telling me i am on call with no promise or idea of when i "might" be working again.

Is this legal?

I wasnt fired/laid off so i cant get un-employment while job hunting. Im not working so i cant make any money. Are they using a legal loop hole to **** me over?

I'm guessing you were working though a temp agency?

I've had it happen to me years ago in SC. You get to that 90 'probationary period' and they say they're cutting production, so they don't need the extra shift. 2 days later there's a whole new crew working the night shift through the same temp agency.

They suck. It's just an excuse not to hire and pay benefits.

No, i didnt do it through temp agency. I applied and was hired normally with a 90 probation. There has got to be something i can do. This is wrong on so many levels.

I don't know about labour laws in the US, but from another site I understand that US companies pay UI taxes based on how many employees they lay off, so many companies do what they can too make it as hard as possible to get UI. Some even going to this extent.
