kitchen backsplash

my parents are putting in backsplash in my kitchen, and we found one that looks good and is pretty cheap. the problem is though on the stone tile, there are very deep dips and grooves and such all over the tile.

what do we do about grouting? is there some different way to do it so a bunch of stuff wont get in the holes in the tile?

before you grout tape off the tops so when you grout and clean it wont get into the grooves. then after the grout sets what about a sealer? like that made for granite. if grout would be hard to get out of there then regular cleanning would be a chore too. sounds like a place for bactera if you dont seal it.
