Oil Spill Discussion

I'm creating this thread to hear what people have to say about the oil spill in The Gulf as pretty soon, I'm sure it will be effect a lot of us. Remember this is just a discussion, no need to get heated. I know I'm just opening a great big can of worms.....

We are in Day something or another of this spill and the president addressed the nation from the oval office lastnight (didn't bother watching it though).

My take on it was that he say that BP is going to pay for this spill and they have to fix it ASAP. What I don't understand is instead of telling BP "Fix this spill now!" why isn't the president of the US really saying "Hey BP, what can we do to help resolve this problem fast?".

Now I know that we probably don't have the "experts" that BP "has", but I'm sure that there is something that we could do to help fix this.

What are your thoughts?

The environmental impact from this will be ridiculous. It boggles the mind how little is being done. Its a sad day indeed. Just another example of big business doing whatever the hell they want at everyone else's expense.

i have to wonder why when this spill has been going on for 60 days or so gas prices really havent change to much but let one damn hurricane sit in the gulf for two days and gas goes up 25 cents a gallon

I lived in the panhandle of Florida for 10 years. The Ft Walton Beach-Destin area is the most beautiful place in the World, that I have ever been.. Snow white sugar sand and emerald green gulf water is a sight that brings a smile to my face.... Thinking that this will probably be effected by this accident brings a tear to my eye... I still have very good friends there and they say all is OK for now....

My question is why isn't there a plan for this disaster??? I blame our goverment and the oil companies.... We all know that this can and has happened in the past and I'm sure its not the last one either.... We can take a picture with a phone and then send it over the air waves to a computer anywhere in the world but we can't plug this leak?????? I know its over a mile underwater but as the old saying goes "**** Poor Planning does not necessarly make a problem for me". But this time it does!!!!!!! Plug the damm leak!!!! Clean up the oil and lets get on with life...

It seems that BP's disaster plan delt more with public relations and media control than it did with plugging the leak and cleaning the spill.

They screw up and we pay for it. Why should WE pay more for gas when they are screwing with people's jobs?

Because unfortunately that is how big business works.

I dont think gas prices will raise, because the US only produces 2% of all the oil we use on a daily basis, and this is only 1 well of about 100? It will only raise a few cents, if that. The reason gas prices raise during a hurricane is that most of our ports where oil tankers offload are located near the Gulf and are unable to unload their cargo during a hurricane.

Yeah, well screw big corps. It's really messed up if you think about it - They cost people their jobs, hundreds of people due to not being able to take anything from the Gulf, Restraunts lose business due to no supply of seafood from the Gulf, so the employees there lose their jobs, It's an ongoing chain. And we lose because now since precious oil is being spilled we have to spend MORE for gas. I don't understand, I had this idea for a while. On EVERY rig there should have been a valve cover, to STOP the flow of oil to the pipes then this wouldn't be so severe.

It's not just as easy as a "valve cover" though even it were in place before this happened. These wells are under a great deal of pressure. (not defending BP here - just saying.)

Something could have been thought of, BP had/has the money to make it safer, but they overlooked it. Wouldn't you think at those depths to take extreme caution and safety measures?

What I would like to know is why our government refused help from other countries to provide skimmers that could have taken 10s of thousands of barrels of oil out of the gulf starting on day 3. There have been dozens of people and companies offering suggestions and equipment from very early on, and here we sit on day 60 something with oil still gushing from the well. This administration is an abject failure. Talk talk talk....kick someones a$$, plug the damn hole....I say get off your a$$, stop talking and do something! Let the people affected, or anyone else who wants to participate go do clean up. Bring in tankers and suck the oil from the water, seperate out the oil and put the water back in the Gulf. What a huge pack of frickin loosers the government is.

Safety was brought up multi times and was ignored. I also thought that they would of had a "safety plan" just for this type of problem. Turns out they didn't think it would ever happen.

And yes they do have money as they just signed a $20 billion victim fund bill behind closed doors with the pres and his peeps.

Yeah, they always seem to "think" stuff wouldn't happen, but then reality hits.

I believe that either domestic or international terrorist did it, but I am also a conspiracy theorist, so pay my rants about terrorism and communism no mind.

I call Joe's scout! LOL

I watched ABC news for the first time in a long time lastnight. What the heck is going on with our government? This whole oil spill is one thing but then to push away a small company that wants to help create a few hundred jobs, in the solar industry no less, and then china flies him out and supports him 100%.

There is something majorly wrong with Washington.

Ok.... back to the oil spill discussion now.

Its partially the fault of the government that they ARE drilling that deep. That well is a MILE to the sea floor! That is 5280 feet, just to the well head! The greenies have effectively blocked near-shore drilling, where things could be repaired. Meanwhile, in the same area, China is sinking well after well for Cuba in their claimed territory. Just weeks before the call was "Drill, baby, drill!" Now this. I fear a wave of knee-jerk, feel-good legislation that will hamstring our oil production, giving the Chinese the chance to stick their straws into our soda. Yes BP fucked up. Yes, they should pay dearly! But lets not get caught up in the moment and make stupid laws and regs that we will regret later that will make us uncompetitive. Btw, BP can afford to write a check and be done with this. Stock was at $31 today, good BUY opportunity.

Just because you're paranoid, doesn't mean they're NOT out to get you! Shhh, quiet! Was that just a black helicopter in "whisper mode"? BTW, I am also the midwests largest distributor of all-aluminum, mind-control, wave-blocking helmets. Just PM me with your needs and suspected frequencies!

Wait, there is nobody in the cab. Why is the meter running? But really I haven't heard much on how it happened, just a bunch of people complaining about bp. Stuff happens! But by stopping the drilling here means we got to buy somebody else s oil. My Scout gets 11.5 miles to the gallon, we need all the fuel we can get.

I saw that the amount of oil coming out now is ~2.5 million gallons a day and there is enough oil to cover all of Kansas and then some.

It sure does. Usually well over a dollar a gallon depending on what gas station you go to around here.

dodgenut7 - It was on the news lastnight that they had sent out over 86,000 checks but only something like 17,500 actually made it to the people. Most were lucky to get $5K which is just enough for a morgage and maybe some utilities. Right after that BP had a commercial on about how they had a help line and all that. Yet they were not willing to talk to the press about any of it.
