Hello From The Land Down Under

At present I`m doing up a 1965 4 door Valiant, It has a slant 6 at the moment but will be getting a stocked small block at some stage & a 1970 VG 4 door pacer, This will be restored to original as it is a very rear bathurst homologated race car one of 208 built. Here`s a few pic`s
Cheers Doug

The VG Pacer Runs a hemi ....But it`s a 6 Cylinder hemi The 6 Cylinder was designed by you yanks to be use in trucks, But for some reason it just didn’t happen. In 65/66 I think, Chrysler Australia refined the motor to run it in there passenger cars from 1970 to 1980 with great success motor sizes were 215,245,265. You could buy a 1970 vg pacer of the showroom floor in 4 different models, There was your basic model 4 door sedan 245ci with 3spd floor shift, Next model was the same but it was a 2 door(same as your 1969 dodge dart)coup, Next model was a track pack E31 which was bored 40th over size it had shot penned internals hotter cam, 2bb carb, close-ratio gearbox, 3sp floor shift & 323 lsd diff + it had a 36 gallon fuel tank in the boot, The model I have which is a E34 was the same as the E31 except it ran a 4bb carb & a bit hotter cam. The E31 & E34 were built for our great race the Bathurst 1000 which is a race around a mountain for about 6 hours, It would be the equivalent to your Indianapolis 500. Our 3 biggest car makers Chrysler, Ford & GMH(Holden) had to build 200 cars for homologation to run in this race, The big 36 gallon fuel tank was put in so they only had to stop 3 or 4 times for fuel, Which was a big advantage. It`s sorry to say they just could not match the 351 V8 ford xw falcons & 327 chev V8 Monaro’s of the day, But they did win their class & finished forth over all which was a great achievement out of a 6 cylinder. There are not many left now-a-days as allot were wrecked out & some just rusted away. This is a pic of how the pacer will end up....I hope
Cheers Doug

The model after my pacer was the 1971 charger. The factory brought out the R/T model again for the Bathurst 1000 with a 6pack(3 triple Weber carbs)265ci hemi 6, The 71 model was the R/T E38 with 280bhp + 3spd gearbox, The 72 model was a R/T E49 with 302bhp & they finally put a 4spd gearbox in it. The E49 was good for 135mph with 3.50 diff gearing. The E49 ran a respectable third in the 72 race, But they had alternator problems in the last 20 laps and had to change the battery 2 or 3 times, If that didn’t happen it could have won the race that year. After 1972 the government clamped down on the factory supercar program and Chrysler Australia pulled out of racing for good, Which was a shame as they were developing the E55 340 charger which would have been a weapon. Here is a link for the R/T charger & engine. And a photo of the R/T E49 charger that came third in the 72 race.
